WASHINGTON (CNS) -- A new Vatican instruction on the extraordinary form of the Mass intends to make it easier for Catholics who want to worship this way to do so. In lay terms, it has eliminated some of the red tape. For example, in years past, Catholics who wanted to attend the Latin-language liturgy celebrated according to the 1962 Roman Missal had to request this from their parish priest, who then had to receive permission from the bishop to offer these Masses. Now, according to a Vatican instruction released May 13, pastors do not have to get the local bishop's permission to approve these Masses for Catholic groups even when these groups are small or formed of people from different parishes or dioceses. The instruction calls on bishops and pastors to respond generously to Catholics who seek to attend this Mass, commonly known as the Tridentine Mass. The Vatican instruction, issued by the Ecclesia Dei commission and approved by Pope Benedict XVI, is a follow-up to a 2007 apostolic letter "Summorum Pontificum," which relaxed restrictions on its use, saying this Mass should be made available in every parish where groups of the faithful want it. U.S. church officials say these relaxed restrictions do not necessarily mean there will be a significant increase in the number of Masses offered in the extraordinary form, primarily because there are just not enough priests trained to celebrate these Masses and those who can are aging.

None of us is perfect, and, here on Earth, no institution is perfect either. When I look at the Civil War, I am proud of my country, not because a war had to be fought to end the slavery which existed, but that the U.S. took the steps necessary to challenge and end that evil.
When I look at the Catholic Church, I see not only the infiltration of the homosexual agenda into the priesthood and seminaries, in the chaos of the 1960’s and Vatican II, but the very forceful and straightforward way in which this evil was dealt with and is being watched with eagle eyes at this point in time.
It is not that evil will never exist; Original Sin guarantees that. It is only how it is dealt with and how the wrongs are righted.
This article does not stimulate great confidence in CNS, not that I ever had much. Whoever wrote this is so ill-informed on the situation surrounding the 1962 Missal as to be frightening.
The most recent Vatican instruction did not eliminate the need for a priest to ask his bishop for permission.
Ever since 2007 the priest did not have to ask permission. The recent ruling simply makes that utterly clear because some bishops were trying to insist that they had to give permission. The Vatican finally told them, NO. Stop obstructing. The recent instruction merely clarifies things about the 2007 Summorum Pontificum that should have been clear all along but obviously weren’t clear to this idiot reporter.
Nor can this doofus be referring to before 2007 with “before.” Before 2007 a request for the old Mass did not go from people to priest to bishop but from people to bishop. And most bishops ignored John Paul’s request to generously grant people’s requests. That’s why 2007 happened. This reporter doesn’t have a clue.

Ditto the lack of knowledge on the grounds of claiming that most of the priests who can celebrate the Mass are old. While a number of older priests did once know how to celebrate the extraordinary form, virtually none can do so after a 40+ year hiatus without study and retraining. The majority, and probably vast majority, who celebrate the extraordinary form are younger than the average priest and have been trained in the past 25 years.
