FWIW: The beasts of Revelation are where the Catholic Church got its traditional ordering of the gospels, and its symbols it associates with them.

The gospel of Matthew focuses on the royalty of Christ, tracing his lineage through the kings of Israel. The prophecies largely are used to establish Christ’s inheritance of the kingship; his preaching emphasizes the establishment of the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth (i.e., Sermon on the Mount, an exalted position.) For this reason it is associated with a Lion, the symbol of a King.

The gospel of Mark focuses on the works of Christ. It does not trace his lineage. The shortest of all gospels, it emphasizes neither his royal, mortal, or divine origins, stating simply the works that he did. For this reason, it is associated with a Bull calf, a beast of burden.

The gospel of Luke focuses on the human nature of Jesus. Its lineage traces is more lowly than Matthew’s; it’s infancy narrative focuses on his human family, of Mary and Elizabeth, and Zechariah and John. It’s prophecies are focused on the effects he has on his people. For this reason, the symbol of Luke is the Man.

The gospel of John focuses on the divine nature of Jesus. It is composed of seven miraculous signs signifying seven spiritual works, and seven passages of Jesus’ passion and resurrection. It contains no infancy narrative, but instead describes Christ’s heavenly origins, his coexistence since the beginning of time as the eternal Word. For this reason, the symbol of John is the symbol of an Eagle, representing the majesty over angelic powers.
