Abuse of Caucus [whiner's caucus]
Self | 22 Feb 2011 | Natural Law

Posted on 02/22/2011 2:53:04 PM PST by Natural Law

An alarming trend is developing in the Free Republic Religion Forum in which a caucus identifier is being claimed for non-existent or impossibly defined groups. With the caucuses being self defined we see nonsense like the Sola Scriptura Caucus. Of course it doesn’t mean all Scripture, only the thread initiators or Forum Moderators definition of Scripture. Jews who believe in the Scripture of the Old Testament are excluded. Mormons, Seventh Day Adventists, and Jehovah’s Witnesses are excluded even though they believe in the sufficiency of their own versions of Scripture. The not so transparent purpose of these faux caucuses is clearly to exclude a group of FReepers in a modern day repetition of “Whites Only” and “Irish Need Not Apply” prejudice. If this is allowed to stand what will we see next; caucuses so narrowly defined so as to only include one’s bridge club or to exclude an individual FReeper? How about a caucus designation for everyone but citizens from New York? How about a men’s only caucus? How about a caucus for those of us who drive BMWs? And what is being discussed in these faux caucus threads? Critical doctrinal issues such as ruggedized aircraft, home schooling, and civil unrest in Egypt. Give me a break!

That’s how I see it, too.

Perhaps some Scriptural cleanser for your glasses might help. Latin Catholicism falls under one bishop. Russian Orthodox under another. They are different dioceses.

Unless you're whining, I suppose.

Yet if a Proddy so much as drives by and LOOKs at your caucus threads dozens of RC’s will sit on the abuse button

So true. Sheesh, why are they having a cow over Sola Scriptura threads? Now that it is defined to them, they know they don't belong, so go away!

Mark, can I take the time to write my response to you with Scripture provided? I would rather get back to you with a clear understanding of my position, than type off a few words and wait for your response. I do have more respect for you than that.

What i see as absurd is an RC inferring that they could somehow qualify as holding to sola scriptura.

The forum, the internet and Roman Catholic libraries are filled with links like this one which state clearly that Roman Catholics believe in at least 21 REASONS TO REJECT SOLA SCRIPTURA

As a quick antidote to the above link, let me quickly add...

ANTI-SOLA SCRIPTURA ARGUMENTS REFUTED

Any bets that a single person under 40 gets that reference?

Only the married ones?

Very good.

I’m actually about to sign off for the night. God bless. I’m sure that it will be as thorough as your usual posts and I will look forward to it in the morning.

I will join no caucus that would have me as a member. And furthermore, why a duck?

I pray Mr. Jim will never close down the open religious thread. Being on that thread has taught me many things about how to deal with people in the outside world..who use tactics and play with your brain....we are all going to need to know how to do this with events worldwide kicking up as they are and will be.

The moderator and the rules have always said the open forum is not for weak-kneed posters...and I was just that in the beginning. I have since learned to stand firm in my faith...which has flowed over into how to deal with Democrats...Communists and those who oppose our American way of life.

What better place for Christians to test their “Armor” then on this particular thread? among other Christians...What better place to discover where you're weak but among those who will not let you off the hook and play naive and use sweetie type verbiage. Because we had better know how to stand strong and firm with the direction this administration is taking this country....both in our faith..and in our political stance..as well as for our families.

We need a place that tests us... that is moderated and yet allows for passionate ideas, thoughts and lively debate....and yes to learn to let it roll of our shoulders when the climate is hot and heavy.

We all need the chips on our shoulders to be knocked off now and then...it humbles the soul.

You should direct your “correction” to WPaCon.

They prefer to be called “Roman Catholic.” You can tell them they’re wrong.

If I had wanted to deal with the typical RC nonsense I would have posted it as an open thread. It is the height of arrogance to assume you can just jump on threads and make demands. It seems to be a common trait among your church members.

INDEED.

It honestly does not sound like a topic that would justify a Caucus, unless you’re in a cargo cult and worship planes, lol.

But seriously, if there were to be a clear Catholic aspect to it, and if the original article posted were to remain true to that clear aspect, and if all the various FReeper Catholics were to play nice and stick to it without veering into criticisms or comparisons directed at those outside the Caucus, I suppose it could be done.

I did not even ask you to remove the designation. I asked why and gave my reason why I thought it was not one. If the RM had allowed it to remain a caucus I would not have posted.

Bottom line after reading the RM explanation of caucus threads I agree with you and asked it to be made a caucus again.

"So, you believe Arabic speaking Protestants worship a false deity?"

I spend a lot of time in Malaysia and there is a bruhaha there over the printing and distribution of Bibles by the Protestant denominations in the Malay language because they too use the word Allah for God.

I do not take or eschew action at the direction of the likes of you.

They prefer to be called “Roman Catholic.” You can tell them they’re wrong.

Terms have specific meanings. For instance, I believe that you self identify as Presbyterian, a denomination that is taking better than 90% of its believers directly into the toilet that the Anglicans, ELCA, and Methodists are currently diving into.

Peter is not the Rock upon which the church is built.

In Matthew 16 Jesus is talking to all of the Apostles. They were all asked the question of who they thought He was. Though Peter was the one who answered for the group Jesus was talking to them all. When Peter said that they believed He was “Christ the Son of the Living God” Jesus replied and said that it was not flesh and blood that had revealed that to Peter but that it was “my Father which is in heaven”. He then says to Peter “and thou art Peter”, acknowledging that He knew who Peter was just as Peter knew who Jesus was. Then Jesus, referring back to “my Father which is in heaven”, says, “upon this rock I will build my church”.

In other places in scripture Jesus is referred to as the “corner stone”, but the rock that the church is build on is the Father.

If you want reference to God as the Rock here are some verses.

Deut. 32:4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.

2 Sam. 22:2 And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; 3 The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.

Psalm 18:31, "And who is a rock, except our God."

Isaiah 44:8, "Is there any God besides Me, or is there any other Rock? I know of none."

Rom. 9:33, "Behold, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense, and he who believes in Him will not be disappointed."

1 Cor. 3:11, "For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ,"

1 Cor. 10:4, "and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock (petras) which followed them; and the rock (petra) was Christ."

1 Pet. 2:8, speaking of Jesus says that he is "A stone of stumbling and a rock (petra) of offense"; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed."

Don’t try to tell us that Peter replaced God Himself as the Rock upon which the church is built.

those who wish to discuss the relative merits and implications of Sola Scriptura amongst themselves. But to use it to have discussions of things like motor cycle maintenance and cookie recipes????

Is this REALLY a problem for you? I don't skim the Catholic caucus threads, gnashing my teeth in outrage if they stray off topic. Good grief, the caucus threads are safe places and people connect. I'm over it.

So long as folks caucusing among themselves do not attack others ... let them.

Somewhat kinda, sorta, makes sense. Except for the fact that this is the internet. For many people using it to attack others is the whole point. A recent foray into YouTube land finally convinced me of that.

What are the three topics that shouldn't be discussed in polite company because of the potential of, well, "you know"? On the Religion Forum of the Free Republic (a political site) you've just tackled two of them. The Chat section takes care of the 3rd.

"The One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church"

Its right there between Total Depravity and Unconditional Election, you know, just after Sola Scriptura.
