She’s pro-freedom, she’s pro-life, she’s anti-illegal immigration, she gets up liberals’ noses, both in the States and over here, she’s a self-made mother of five who worked her way up and shoots from the hip. So why doesn’t Sarah Palin do it for so many British conservatives?
It’s not just her tendency towards the odd gaffe, whether it be her Shakespearean coinage of new words or her misunderstanding of what “blood libel” means; Obama makes just as many gaffes, as will anyone in the spotlight. But for some reason they don’t get mentioned on the BBC.
Perhaps it’s just her – to British eyes – religious zeal. Bear in mind that for 26 years she attended a church where they speak in tongues. Call me Richard Dawkins, but that strikes me as being just a bit odd. She also said that troops in Iraq were on “a task that is from God”, and has also urged her congregation to pray for a $30 billion oil pipeline across the state. Her comments about Israel also hint that her support for that country might be based less on the principle of the nation-state but on the Evangelical Left Behind novels, in which the Jews must all return to the Holy Land for Rapture ie the end of the world to start.
Sorry if this makes me sound like a metropolitan snob sipping my latte and sneering at “real folk”, but the role of any American president is to stop the end of the world originating in the Middle East. I also appreciate that Obama’s background is also pretty wacky too – give me speaking in tongues any day over Jeremiah “America’s chickens coming home to roost” Wright....

its simple, left wing news dominate UK media to the point that it even effect the right wingers there. Palin did not misuse the word blood libel. The phrase was redefined by the media to make it a gaffe for Palin and not a gaffe when used by others

This guy’s opinion is worth squat. Very few Europeans, Britons included, understand the USA or what it is truly about, even among the supposedly “conservative” ones. Most of them make the consistent mistake of thinking that the US is just a rogue European state, and so they analyze us from that viewpoint, failing to understand that our ancestors left Europe behind precisely because they rejected the European way of thinking on a fundamental level.
If he still has any teeth he’s not a true Brit. British dentists should be renamed gum therapists.
On the other hand, the Brit press has never carried a fawning interview with that Duke of Edinburgh about what HM is giving him as a Valentines Day present.
