“So far from it being irreverent to use silly metaphors on serious questions, it is one’s duty to use silly metaphors on serious questions. It is the test of one’s seriousness. It is the test of a responsible religion or theory whether it can take examples from pots and pans and boots and butter-tubs. It is the test of a good philosophy whether you can defend it grotesquely. It is the test of a good religion whether you can joke about it.”
Chesterton would have had a field day with Mohammedans and Mohammedism.
Note to producers, casting agencies and directors: don't hire Lyons. He has no conception of what the audience will find entertaining or creative.
In addition, he's a slow learner. He attended mass weekly but never seemed to grasp the significance of taking communion.
So there you have it, I refer you to any use of the image of "The Prophet" Moe Hammid, and see if you can joke about it. "We will kill you!" is the usual response from the believers in MOE. Ergo, Islam is out of the "good" category.
To paraphrase Forrest Gump, “Evil is as Evil does.”
Not that I would count what Lyons did as evil (tho surely misguided and ignorant); but, his defense is typical of those who perpetrate evil of any and every scale. Lyons says, “It was not my INTENT to ....” (emph. mine). Good intentions have nothing to do with it. There’s a reason why they say that the road to Hell is paved with them. After all, Hitler had good intentions — from his own point of view.
