Troy Polamalu says 'Kala Christougena!' [Orthodox Caucus]

Theodora Polamalu, Paisios Polamalu and Troy Polamalu.

"Kala Christougena!" said Steelers safety Troy Polamalu. That's Greek for "Merry Christmas!"

Mr. Polamalu and his wife, Theodora, actually celebrated Christmas 13 days ago, but they keep the same Orthodox traditions as those who observe today. Most Orthodox celebrate on Dec. 25, but many Slavic churches tie liturgy to the old Julian calendar, which is 13 days behind the Gregorian calendar. The Greek Orthodox Church and some others have adopted the Gregorian calendar -- except at Easter.

It memory is correct, this year, Easter will be obsserved by all Christians, just like last year. A hopeful sign for Christian unity.

On the same Sunday, yes. I don't remember this happening two Paschas in a row in my lifetime, though it may have. Makes family get togethers easier in a country like this one.

And they named their boys Paisios and Ephraim! What great, spiritually strong names. It doesn't get much better than that! God Bless all of them. "When he has kept longer fasts "I have never felt more spiritually strong," he said."

That's what makes Great Lent such a life changing experience.

A hopeful sign for Christian unity.

Actually, it is just a happy coincidence of the calendars and calculation methods reaching the same conclusion. It happens.

I'm less concerned with the fact that there are 300 plus brands of Christianity with differing dogmas than the fact that there are a handful among us who are more interested in shooting at other Christian brands than they are in defending against Muslim hordes who would kill us all.

But after fasting, and being baptized Orthodox, it's like reading a whole new Bible.

If he was raised Catholic, why was he baptized again?

Just a guess, but I bet he met a really hot Orthodox girl in Pittsburgh. It sounds like he has taken to the religion, which is nice.

No, I mean it's forbidden to baptize someone again who has already had a Trinitarian baptism.

Looks like another priest that let his denominational hubris overrun his faithfulness to his creed, the Ecumenical Councils and his hierarchy. Some fault also lies with the Catechumen though.

It's a widespread problem.

Forbidden by whom? Orthodox, Catholic or what? I think one baptism should suffice, but if someone wants to do it again, what is the theological basis to forbid it? It seems to me it would be like renewing your marriage vows with a different person officiating.

Forbidden by any church that considers the First Council at Nicaea binding. So Anglican , Lutheran , Presbyterian, Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Assyrian Church of the East, Armenian Apostolic, Oriental Orthodox, and a few I'm sure I missed.

"One baptism for the remission of sins" which must be Trinitarian to be valid.

It seems to me it would be like renewing your marriage vows with a different person officiating.

That's also forbidden in most of the above churches. Although who knows what the Anglicans, Presbyterians, or the more liberal Lutherans actually practice these days.

You don't "re-do" the sacrament of Holy Matrimony.

Having no personal knowledge of his conversion but having read a number of stories in the modern media that get even the simplest facts about Orthodoxy wrong, I suspect that the author didn’t get what Chrismation meant.

According to the article, her background was Muslim and Protestant; they converted to Orthodox Christianity together.

...I suspect that the author didn’t get what Chrismation meant.

Then the author would have had to quote him wrongly:

"I have read the Bible many times. But after fasting, and being baptized Orthodox, it's like reading a whole new Bible. You see the depth behind the words so much more clearly."

There are more than a few priests double baptizing in both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches even after they've been instructed not to. I know of cases personally.

She is ok, but I don’t think I’d convert because of her.

But when you have Easter on the same day for all Christians, as well as a united Lent, it gives witness to the rest of the world to Christ and the Gospel.

There is a website that I had found that is working for one date for Easter.
