Tuesday, all or nearly all the Roman Catholics in the state House of Representatives defy a real-life Catholic bishop by electing Joe Straus speaker of the House.

Catholic state representatives need to go to confession.
On Dec. 31, retired Bishop Rene Gracida of Corpus Christi wrote on his blog that "The re-election of Rep. Joe Straus as Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives would be a legislative and moral disaster for Texas."
He went on: "I cannot believe that any Catholic member of the Texas House of Representatives could with a clear conscience vote for the election of Joe Straus as Speaker. And if a Catholic member of the Texas House of Representatives cannot vote for Joe Straus with a CLEAR conscience, that member would be committing a serious sin by casting a vote for Joe Strauss (sic)."
In Gracido's opinion, Straus is not sufficiently pro-life and even received a $1,000 campaign contribution from Planned Parenthood's PAC.
The rest of the Legislature thinks Straus isn't a disaster, but the budget situation is.
