Among Mormons, a deep divide on immigration (OPEN)
Los Angeles Times ^ | December 31, 2010 | Nicholas Riccardi

Two leading Utah activists embody opposite views on the issue – and both cite the church's teachings as the core of their positions.

At the Sandstrom family table on the edge of the Wasatch Mountains, eldest son Stephen listened carefully as his parents talked about politics, the divine nature of the nation's founding and the importance of the rule of law.

At the Yapias family table in Peru, eldest son Tony felt the strain of a family divided.

This summer a list of purportedly illegal immigrants was anonymously circulated — complete with birth dates and, in some cases, noting pregnancies. Two state workers were blamed and fired.

Finally, in November, the Mormon Church stepped into the fray, carefully lending its weight to Yapias' position. It endorsed a set of principles issued by Utah business leaders who oppose Sandstrom's legislation, and issued a statement calling for immigration policy to be made not just with an eye toward the rule of law, but also compassion and family unity.

Church officials said they spoke out because they saw the two wings hardening their positions. "We wanted to moderate the debate," church spokesman Mike Purdy said.

That wasn't enough for some Latino leaders, who complain that the church, unlike many Catholic, Jewish, Islamic and evangelical groups, has been too timid in defending illegal immigrants even as Latinos join the faith in increasing numbers.

Meanwhile, some immigration hard-liners sympathetic to Sandstrom have talked about cutting their donations to the church, charging that religious leaders are pandering to Latinos.

"The church's biggest problem is that it's trying to straddle the fence," said Archie Archuleta.

I don't know what disgusts me more -the "latino leaders" cynical manipulation of the the churches or the churches themselves playing the temple money changers.

It's about the money again. It's always about the money. As for "Latinos" joining the faith, I'm like those guys from Missouri and I'm calling BS on that.

There is nothing wrong with legal immigration. In fact, legal immigration is better for our economy. The main people who oppose legal immigration are the unions who simply suck at life, are averse to any competition, and just want a handout. Ironically, unions support illegal immigration.

Many of the illegal immigrants are lowlifes who are here to just commit more crimes with impunity. But as far as jobs are concerned, I honestly never see any poor whites or blacks standing out on the street corner, so it’s hard for me to sympathize with them because the illegals are taking their jobs.

I hope you aren't implying that standing in front of Home Depot is indicative of anything other than not having english skills, or skills of any kind, a home, a family network and proper documentation.

Can you please explain the nobility of standing on somebody else’s property to look for work?

I don’t get it.

Would you want somebody standing on your property all day long asking for work?

Even I wouldn’t do it, because I have dignity and respect for the property of others, including public property.

If I wanted temp jobs, I would go to Manpower or Labor Ready but employers have to pay taxes and insurance if they go through legal channels.

By the way, I have talked to both White and Black guys who have done the Home Depot thing and they told me that syndicates control them, and get threatened if they dare show their faces to do the work that illegals do.

“What’s the Catholic church’s opinion on illegal immigration?”

Shhhh, no need to go there. There’s over a hundred million Catholics in Mexico. This is not important to the anti Mormon agenda.

Move along, nothing to see here.

What’s the Catholic church’s opinion on illegal immigration?
Interesting question. A brief catechism search turned up the following:
  1. The more prosperous nations are obliged, to the extent they are able, to welcome the foreigner in search of the security and the means of livelihood which he cannot find in his country of origin. Public authorities should see to it that the natural right is respected that places a guest under the protection of those who receive him.

Political authorities, for the sake of the common good for which they are responsible, may make the exercise of the right to immigrate subject to various juridical conditions, especially with regard to the immigrants’ duties toward their country of adoption. Immigrants are obliged to respect with gratitude the material and spiritual heritage of the country that receives them, to obey its laws and to assist in carrying civic burdens.

  2. Access to employment and to professions must be open to all without unjust discrimination: men and women, healthy and disabled, natives and immigrants. For its part society should, according to circumstances, help citizens find work and employment.

Hmmmmm…“obey its laws…”

It is increasingly hard to beLIEve that the lds church is "led in every step" by an unchanging God.

Millions of adult members grew up learning about patriotism and the evils of socialism from Ezra Taft Benson, and now keep getting pounded by Harry Reid and Romney's liberal, SALT LAKE APPROVED, political garbage.

Mark my words, the day will come that Salt Lake tells members to disarm, and turn in their neighbors who won't.
