Mormon Church Expands Hispanic Outreach- Their Fastest Growing Group of Converts

Image

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) is one of the most active modern practitioners of missionary work, with over fifty thousand full-time missionaries worldwide, as of the end of 2009.

Commonly referred to as Mormon missionaries, most LDS Church missionaries are single young men and women in their late teens and early twenties and are assigned to a mission of the church, which is usually far from the missionary’s home. Missionaries do not receive a salary for the work they undertake, and themselves or their families financially support most. Throughout the history of the church, over one million missionaries have been sent on missions. Image

Nationwide, less than 1 percent of Hispanics are Mormon, compared to almost 70 percent Catholic, according to the Pew Research Center. Worldwide, Hispanics make up the fastest growing contingent of Mormon converts, church leaders said.

In Virginia recently a group of new Mormon missionaries arrived. In homes, speaking Spanish, the Mormons kept their message simple and repeated their invite to their Church, which includes a service translated into Spanish and carried through headphones.

“We go a lot off trial-and-error,” Mormon Elder Carter Campbell, 20, said of the language challenge. Like other elders and sisters, as the missionaries are known, Campbell learned Spanish in six weeks. “It’s hard to persuade in Spanish,” he said. “How to get to the hearts of the people?”

During lessons in homes, missionaries try to help individuals grow, not change, they said. In the case of speaking to Catholic Hispanics, the goal is reaching common ground.

The Mormon Church first deployed Spanish-speaking missionaries in the over 20 years ago, it is only this year that they plan to expand their outreach to Hispanics and further increase their fastest growing population.

FROM THE RELIGION FORUM MODERATOR:

Open threads are a town square. Antagonism though not encouraged, should be expected

Posters may argue for or against beliefs of any kind. They may tear down other’s beliefs. They may ridicule.

On all threads, but particularly “open” threads, posters must never “make it personal.” Reading minds and attributing motives are forms of “making it personal.” Making a thread “about” another Freeper is “making it personal.”

When in doubt, review your use of the pronoun “you” before hitting “enter.”

Like the Smoky Backroom, the conversation may be offensive to some.

Thin-skinned posters will be booted from “open” threads because in the town square, they are the disrupters.

http://www.freerepublic.com/~religionmoderator/

Thin-skinned (emotional, whiney or mercurial temper) posters are the disruptors on open threads.

Mormon Church Expands Hispanic Outreach- Their Fastest Growing Group of Converts
"I don't think the intent of the Article of Faith was to make us vigilantes and gatekeepers and create anti-immigrant rhetoric and climate," said Ignacio Garcia, a Brigham Young University history professor. Those who come into this country illegally make hard choices, Garcia said. "It's a violation of the law, sure, but circumstances often force people to decide to break one law to obey the higher law"....
....The church takes a sort-of "don't ask, don't tell" approach to the immigration status of its own members. Some estimate that 50 percent to 75 percent of members in Utah's 100-plus Spanish-speaking congregations are undocumented. That includes many bishops, branch presidents, even stake presidents. The church sends missionaries among undocumented immigrants across the country, baptizing many of them without asking about their status. It also allows them to go to the temple and on missions.

Are the lds still “converting” illegals? There have been several articles written that tell of illegals in their mission work, and supported by SLC.
Now that’s outreach.

We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.

Except when it comes to illegals.

Hmm. Is there some reason that Mormon men (decidedly YOUNG men) can achieve the rank and receive the appellation elder instead of just "brother", while Mormon women are denied a similar honorific?

Haven't any Mormon women noticed this lack of appreciation and respect and spoken out about it?

I thought it was particularly telling that the article verified that the mormon missionaries are specifically targeting Hispanic Catholics

Obviously mormons feel it is acceptable to poach on the turf of Christians while we have them howling and calling us "jihadists" about our so-called "bashing" of their religion.

If telling Catholics that the only way to salvation is through the mormon church, I'd call that "bashing", wouldn't you?

You betcha. Funny in all the years I have gone to church I have never once heard anyone say that you gain Salvation by being a member of a church, they have ALL said Salvation comes through Jesus Christ.

Yes, and the Mormons are not politically correct so the new immigrants will become Americanized in basic civic and family values. No church is perfect and I always pray that Jesus can use everyone of us for the best.

The vast majority of Mormons are Republican or independent.
The more hispanics that join the LDS church, the fewer hispanics that become active.

The church is extremely careful not to be partisan. However they encourage members to become involved in politics and to vote but discourage members voting without researching all of the issues.

When you ask Jesus to use people for the best are we talking about the created lds jesus or the Biblical eternal Jesus?

If what you are saying in this post is correct why then do lds vote for Reid and Romeny in such high numbers?

The moromon church _IS_ an outgrowth of Islam.

Joespeh Smith said so himself.

(Muttley snicker).

Every one of them.
