Bush Memoir Says He Returned to His Faith, Time and Time Again in Office [Bush's Closet Catholicism]
The Washington Post ^ | 10/29/10 | Elizabeth Tenety

George W. Bush's account of his life in office is scheduled for release on Nov. 9, but Drudge Report Thursday revealed a glimpse into the book's themes, including that the former president "returned to his faith, time and time again."

Bush famously told a minister, "I feel like God wants me to run for President. I can't explain it, but I sense my country is going to need me," an assertion that drew support from religious conservatives backing their man in the Oval Office.

According to Drudge, the president's spiritual life and positions on social issues formed the core of his presidency:

In the chapter "Stem Cells", Bush describes receiving a letter from Nancy Reagan detailing a "wrenching family journey".

But ultimately, Bush writes: "I did feel a responsibility to voice my pro-life convictions and lead the country toward what Pope John Paul II called a culture of life."

In the book, Bush describes an emotional July 2001 meeting with the Pope at the pontiff's summer residence.

Savaged by Parkinson's, the Pope saw the promise of science, but implored Bush to support life in all its forms.

Later, at the Pope's funeral -- and after a prodding from his wife that it's a time to "pray for miracles" -- Bush found himself saying a prayer for the cancer-stricken ABCNEWS anchor Peter Jennings.

For more on Bush's "closet Catholicism" read this 2008 story by Daniel Burke.

Former Bush speechwriter Michael Gerson, another evangelical with an affinity for Catholic teaching, says that the key to understanding Bush's domestic policy is to view it through the lens of Rome.

Wasn't there a quote a couple of years ago about him feeling some sort of experience come over him when visiting the pope or the Vatican or something like that?

Personally, I think it is a great thing that he visited Pope John Paul II, one of the real voices for freedom in the 1980’s when we WERE locked in a struggle with the Soviet Union, and that he took serious and thoughtful advice on the use of fetal tissue.

I think that is a good thing, don’t you?

It is OK to respect certain positions of one anther’s faith. I am not morman but how can you not like those nice young men and their manners who ride bikes through my neighborhood. So I can respect greatly their love of family without even thinking theology.

Regardless of his membership in any particular church, Bush is a deeply spiritual Christian, who believes in the power of prayer and the dignity of human life. This is in sharp contrast to our current erstwhile Muslim President who spent 20 years in a so-called church listening to racial hatred and anti-American vitriol.

I believe Bush used too many AA slogans to chart his presidency.: ‘Live and let live.’, ‘Let go and let God.’, ‘Easy does it.”

One of Bush’s biggest problems - if not the biggest - was his willingness to be too nice and to trust the honorableness of his enemy.

This, alas, did nothing but make him look weak in the eyes of his enemies and confuse his friends.

Be harmless as doves, yes - but the first part of that line, is “be wise as serpents.” He wasn’t, alas.

I agree. Most great religions boil down to God, life, family and do unto others. What’s not to like about that?

Islam, on the other hand, is death cult.

I just wish Dubya had prayed a little harder over the illegal immigration issue.

I agree. Islam worships death.

George Bush is not perfect, but I felt safe with him in charge. He loves America, God , and family. So different from the hate America Obama.

Bush used a lot of (close to) Biblical sayings in his presidency!

"Either you are with us or you are for the terrorists."
~~George W. Bush

Only a few words are changed there from a direct quote from the Bible!

He has in the past attributed his conversion to Christ occurring while speaking with Billy Graham during a walk on the beach.

That the liberals across the board denounce the conservative move against embryonic stem cell research as if it was the same as stell cell research and that no one calls them on it bothers me to no end.

Yea, like "Islam is a religion of peace." Then there is this one, "those boarder hoppers are just here to work."

I lump the Bushs together with people like Huckabee, McCain, Limpywrist Graham, and host of other Rinos. They are like "White washed sepulchers full of dead men's bones." Direct quote from somewhere....I'm not sure where. /S

And if anyone wants to hold up Billy Graham as a Christian model, check out his youtube conversation with that other Christian model rev Schuller http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNCnxA91fHE

This kind of rino PC'isam is the reason the godless, commie, Demo-bastards are winning! They don't fight fair/nice, they fight to WIN. These rinos fight like sissies. Compassionate Conservatives my A$$!
