In dismissing Englands Rump Parliament in 1653, Oliver Cromwell used the following famous words.
You have sat too long for any good you have been doing lately ... Depart, I say; and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go!
We couldnt have said it better ourselves in describing what needs to happen to incumbent trustees on the Toronto Catholic District School Board come voting day, Oct. 25.
Consider their numerous and notorious spending and conflict-of-interest scandals over the past few years. Their arrogance in voting themselves perks and benefits to which they were warned by their own senior staff they were not entitled.
Their maladministration, which led to a provincial takeover of their board.
Given all that, wed have thought these trustees wouldnt have the gall to run again.
But eight are and thus we support organizations such as the Greater Toronto Catholic Parent Network (GTCPN) who are today calling for a clean sweep and a fresh start for the Catholic school board.
Cromwell called in his soldiers to clear out the Rump Parliament.
Fortunately, Catholic school supporters can clean out and clean up their school board with their votes. The GTCPN is urging Catholic school supporters to vote for anyone other than an incumbent and has a list of its recommended candidates across the city at www.gtcpn.com.
Were not endorsing their specific choices, but we do urge Catholic school supporters to inform themselves of who is running for trustee in their wards, who is an incumbent, and to make up their own minds.
We agree with Toronto Archbishop Thomas Collins, who took the extraordinary step of allowing political campaigning outside churches through Sunday, Oct. 17, because of the extraordinary importance for our Catholic community of the election of highly-qualified Catholic School Board trustees.
As Collins put it on a YouTube video, Catholic school trustees must put the good of the children in their charge ahead of their own personal interests and be exemplary in their integrity and conduct.
We need to elect trustees who will represent us with honour and dignity, as worthy stewards of Catholic education, so that we may all be proud of their stewardship he said.
To which we would only add: Amen.
