Face of Defense: Army Guard Gets Its First Muslim Chaplain

By Air Force Tech. Sgt. Johnathon Orrell National Guard Bureau

ARLINGTON, Va., Sept. 24, 2010 – A Texas National Guard officer will become the Army National Guard’s first Muslim chaplain in December.

Army 1st Lt. Rafael Lantigua, right, of the Texas National Guard shakes hands with Air Force Gen. Craig R. McKinley, chief of the National Guard Bureau, during a Ramadan dinner in Washington, D.C. Lantigua will become the Guard's first Muslim chaplain in December 2010. U.S. Army photo by Sgt. Darron Salzer (Click photo for screen-resolution image);high-resolution image available.

Army 1st Lt. Rafael Lantigua, an ecclesiastically endorsed, fully ordained minister, will assume his post after finishing classes required by the Armed Services Chaplain Board.

“I am humbled for this opportunity to be a role model for other members of my faith throughout the military,” he said.

As he was growing up, Lantigua was not a Muslim. He decided to convert when he was a teenager, he said, and he attributed that decision to the diversity of his background. His Baptist mother is an African-American, and his Roman Catholic father is from the Dominican Republic. After his parents divorced, he said, his mother married a Buddhist. “Growing up in such diversity caused me to explore my options,” Lantigua said. That diversity, he said, enabled him to embrace the Muslim faith before he enlisted in the Air Force. He has continued to be open about his religious beliefs, he added, in the hope that he can break down the stigma surrounding Muslims since Sept. 11, 2001.

“I hope that I will be able to encourage more servicemembers of my faith to open up about their religious beliefs, especially with how we are viewed politically,” he said. “I hope to show my fellow military members that Muslims are not bad people and that we are not all radical Muslim terrorists.”

Lantigua said the Guard is more than ready for this move.

“The Guard is ripe for this to take place,” he said. “Muslims have been with us since the formation of this great country. There were Muslims fighting with us during the Revolutionary War.”

Thanks for the barf alert.

I cant wait for these idiots to open up (their explosive laden back packs).

So how many Nazi Shintoists did the US Guard employ during WWII? Just wondering because I am sure we were diverse then. Isn't that what makes us so strong????

Really? Though not an authority on the Revolutionary War, I have read much on it and for some reason (which I believe would be the case) I don't remember any "Mohammads" or "Abduls" among the names I ran accross

The only ONE I can find and the most notable is Peter Saleem aka Saleem Poor, a former slave, who is famous for shooting British Major John Pitcairn and Lieutenant Colonel James Abercrombie in response to a demand for the surrender of the Continental Army at Bunker Hill.

So the short answer would be the fact the son grew up not knowing what religion he ought believe His momma was non committed to her belief. Neither was his daddy. They were agnostics. When as a teen searching for Something to believe discovered a religious /political/military system that
demands of its followers disciplined repetition and subjection. And the boy who had no discipline growing up found
what mom and pop Or moms and pops did not give—musta been a
California popper.

did the Armed Forces bother to discover which Islamic
tradition their new Guard Imam/chaplain follows? IT doesn’t
matter a lot— I suppose because I find the entire system
to be based upon Satanic corruption /deception/ and forced
recitation of the LIES taught. But some Muslims at least appear more benign in their practice than others.I suspect once they force the world to subject its people to Islam
there will not be peace but continued warfare amongst the various sects of Islam(as now) With them blowing each other
up/slaying one another/forcing each other to subject themselves to what they do not believe all in the name of that religion of peace..yeah —right.

Still bs. The Revolution was undertaken by Christian men not Muslims. I could give a crap about an alleged ‘’Muslim’’ at Bunker Hill.

Well if you go back prior to the Revolution, there is a notable Mussy: As related on Rush’s show -— the fellow fancied a local Indian princess, but she was revoled by him, so scorned he killed her. He in turn was beaten to death.

Good start, eh?
