Despite Bishop’s Objection, Seton Hall to Pursue Gay 'Marriage' Course

By Kathleen Gilbert

SOUTH ORANGE, New Jersey, August 30, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Seton Hall University, a Catholic institution of higher education, has not backed down from plans to offer a course on gay "marriage" taught by a homosexual activist professor, it has been confirmed.

News broke in April that political science professor W. King Mott, an openly practicing homosexual who was once demoted after calling the Catholic Church "prima facie homophobic," was slated to teach an upper-level course entitled "The Politics of Gay Marriage" in the Fall 2010 semester.

Archbishop John J. Myers immediately rebuked the plan as "out of sync" with Catholic teaching. He stated that university leaders had been called upon "to take whatever action is required under the law to protect the Catholicity of this university."

A Star-Ledger report Wednesday, however, confirmed that the course would go on as scheduled, and that Mott had received no pressure from university administration to abandon or alter the course.

"This has never been a problem for the academy," Mott told the paper. "It’s been a problem for, it seems, some people outside of it."

Archdiocesan spokesman Jim Goodness confirmed to EWTN Thursday that the class would go ahead despite Archbishop Myers' disapproval, saying there was "nothing" the archdiocese could do about the decision.

In an article for the school newspaper The Setonian earlier this year, Mott said he hoped the gay "marriage" course would help students "gain an appreciation and respect for disinterested analysis that can be used to formulate an informed opinion." A seasoned member of the homosexualist movement, Mott maintains ties with several gay "rights" groups, including Lambda Legal and Human Rights Campaign.

University spokesman Thomas White failed to return a request for information by LifeSiteNews.com as of press time Monday.

Archbishop Myers is not afraid to take a strong stand on Catholic beliefs (prolife, etc).

Just another example of the good Archbishop speaking out against those who corrupt the Catholic Faith in Catholic Institutions

Like Notre Dame, Seton Hall has become another of satan’s cesspools!

No more contributions to these institutions that are enemies of the Roman Catholic Church and of American society.

What has happened to this and other Catholic universities?

They have been taken over by disciples of satan who, like our evil central government, is intent upon ruining young minds and turning them into zombies.

Either Catholics run these places or they don’t. If they dont they should cut all bonds with them.

What possible academic or market value could such a course have?

I agree.

Normally, the Cardinal Newman Society is very vocal about these things.

I think Hurricane Earl might get to be a Cat 5 storm, and maybe throw a monkey wrench in classes at Seton Hall... Of course, that would put a monkey wrench in a lot of things on the East Coast if that happened...

Here is an article from the Cardinal Newman Society in April to correct this problem:

http://www.cardinalnewmansociety.org/News/tabid/54/ctl/Details/mid/452/ItemID/822/Default.aspx

Today, April 30, Most Rev. John J. Myers, Archbishop of Newark, issued a statement of censure regarding a proposed course on same-sex marriage at Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ.

“Archbishop Myers’ strong statement and his efforts to correct this error at Seton Hall are comforting and gratifying to faithful Catholics,” said Patrick J. Reilly, President of The Cardinal Newman Society. “CNS supports Bishop Myers in his consistent efforts to strengthen Catholic identity in Catholic education.”

The proposed course at Seton Hall would begin in Fall 2010 and be taught by associate professor W. King Mott, an open homosexual who was demoted in 2005 after complaining about the Catholic Church’s stance against homosexuality, LifeSiteNews reported.

The following is the statement issued by Archbishop John J. Myers:

As the shepherd of the Archdiocese of Newark, I am responsible for maintaining the Catholic identity of all Church institutions and organizations within the Archdiocese, and for ensuring authentic and orthodox Catholic teaching in all educational institutions and parishes. That responsibility extends to our Catholic elementary and high schools, to our parish religious education programs for both adults and children, and to the Catholic colleges and university operating within my jurisdiction.

Recent news that a course on same-sex marriage is proposed for the fall schedule at Seton Hall University troubles me greatly.

The Church teaches – and has continued to teach for two millennia – that marriage is a union of man and woman, reflecting the complementarity of the sexes. That teaching precedes any societal connotation of marriage, and is based on natural law.

This proposed course seeks to promote as legitimate a train of thought that is contrary to what the Church teaches. As a result, the course is not in synch with Catholic teaching.

Consequently, the Board of Trustees of Seton Hall have asked the Board of Regents to investigate the matter of this proposed course, and to take whatever action is required under the law to protect the Catholicity of this university.

When he met with Catholic educators two years ago during his visit to the United States, our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, spoke of the need for authenticity and adherence to Catholic identity. “Teachers and administrators,” he said, “whether in universities or schools, have the duty and privilege to ensure that students receive instruction in Catholic doctrine and practice. This requires that public witness to the way of Christ, as found in the Gospel and upheld by the Church's Magisterium, shapes all aspects of an institution's life, both inside and outside the classroom.”

“Just another example of the good Archbishop speaking out against those who corrupt the Catholic Faith in Catholic Institutions “

And what does the president of university have to say? Where is the Pope’s leadership?

The universities may be Catholic but they certainly are not Christian.
