BEACON-NEWS
The Kane County Cougars plan to hold a full Catholic mass before their game tonight -- right on the field, with an altar set up near the center field wall.
Fourteen churches will take part in the service.
It's a first for the minor league baseball team, which went with a mass because the team official who came up with the idea is Catholic but is open to other religious services, too, perhaps one a month.
"First thing, we'll pray for no rain -- then a victory," General Manager Jeff Sedivy said.

Anything which p*sses off the ACLU is a good thing. Even if I’m more Protestant than Catholic.
Will the beer tent be open during the Service? :)
We’re Cougar fans as well. Although attendance is down a bit this year, they still have one of the highest attendance levels for low-A ball. I believe only the Dayton Dragons have a higher per game average. (So far this year >5700). Cool to see players at this level who’ve made it to the bigs, including Dallas Braden who pitched a perfect game this year.
Will the beer tent be open during the Service? :)I think only the Consecrated Wine ... :)
Seriously, it would be fun to hear: "Honey, why are you in such a hurry to go to Church?"
Isn’t minor league baseball fun? When we lived in the SF Bay Area we used to make at least one trip per season to watch the San Jose Giants play. Now we are in Nevada and head to Reno to watch the Reno Aces play ball. In fact we are heading to a Fresno Grizzlies (Triple-A Giants) vs the Reno Aces. Hmmm - have to decide which gear to wear.
I used to love the golden retriever they had on the field complete with his dog house by the dugout. We haven’t gone to the games in years, as our kids are now grown up and spend time at Sox Park, but we should get them together for another Cougars game. They absolutely loved it when we went there. It’s one of the nicest things we did for/with our kids growing up.
I’ll have to ask my husband if he knew Dallas Braden was a Cougar. I didn’t realize that. (ty)
When I lived in the area, I attended about a dozen Cougars games every year. Great minor league franchise.
Minor League Baseball rocks.
When I lived in the area, I attended about a dozen Cougars games every year. Great minor league franchise. Minor League Baseball rocks.Yes it does rock!! Our kids would have loved to attend a dozen in a season. It was a bit of a drive for us, though, so we gave it a "special place" designation. :)
There’s over 100 Cougar alumni that have or are currently playing in the majors. Besides Braden, current A’s also include pitchers Andrew Bailey, Trevor Cahill, Vince Mazarro, as well as Cliff Pennington (SS).
A former resident of Batavia we used to attend Cougar games and fell in love with minor league baseball. Still have my cap signed by Ozzy!
Today we’re Wisconsin Timber Rattler season ticket holders and always get the games with the Cougars.
This is awesome that they are doing this! Would be great to see it happen in Wisconsin too!
Play ball!!!!
