Cardinal saddened by those who 'wish to tarnish' the Catholic priesthood

.- The president emeritus of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts, Cardinal Julian Herranz, expressed sadness this week over those who “vilify” priests by generalizing cases of sexual abuse among the clergy.

Speaking to journalists this week, Cardinal Herranz said, “These cases are profoundly sad, they are the most serious crimes that can be committed by a priest.”  It is this fact which causes great sorrow to the Holy Father, he continued, “because it means a priest is betraying his vocation” and bringing hurt to many souls.

Nevertheless, he pointed out, only a small number of priests are involved in such cases, “as the statistics do not even reach one percent.”  For this reason, he lamented those who seek to “tarnish the image of the Catholic priesthood and who in part are succeeding.”

The intention here is to “vilify the other 99 percent of priests faithful to their vocation, who with great generosity and desire, do the best they can for souls.”  They “are working throughout the world and helping so many people in need and those marginalized in society,” the cardinal said.

Cardinal Herranz added that some intend to “also damage the image of the Catholic Church, which has members who are sinners,” but stressed that “the Church is holy because of her origin, because of the sacraments she administers and because of her legion of holy people.”

For this reason, he concluded, the image of the priesthood and the Church must not be tarnished because of the “detestable crimes” of a few of her members.

While His Eminence is right in what he says, he is missing the main point: this is an effect...not a cause. Fact of the matter is that Pope St. Pius X predicted all of this back in 1907. I believe that the Holy Father recognizes this...but that he is in the minority.

While I agree with the Cardinal the Church must accept some fault for not handling the problem correctly in the first place.

It’s a little late to close the barn door, but it has to be done.

And these are the same people who won’t point out the extremely high rate of rape of children by sodomites. Showing that they really don’t give a damn about children, only about furthering their own political power.

He’d be on firmer ground if the church hadn’t given their opponents lots of ammo by trying to cover these ‘serious’ crimes up. Being an accessory makes it difficult to whine about injustices.

I can sure see the defense that everybody does it comes from the top. I cannot tell who actually is in charge, there is as many ‘chiefs’ as there are ....... and there is no such thing as a flesh ‘holy father’. That title is reserved for only ONE, the Heavenly Father...

Until the Catholic Church gets really serious about dealing with this abuse by the clergy issue, it has no one but itself to blame for any image (PR) problems.

What they fail to see isn’t that a few cases of abuse by the priests tarnishes the church’s image, as much as the church’s action, or lack thereof, to the abusive clergy issue.

Very well said.

The Roman Catholic Church is doing a fine job in tarnishing the priesthood all by itself by:

-By the x number of priests who molest boys and girls

AND perhaps more importantly

-By playing hide the child molester by inflicting known child abusers on unsuspecting parishes.

The problem stems from the fact priests are told and believe themselves to be "another Christ" (alter Christus) "in both their personal and professional lives," according to Father Kenneth Baker.

The church in Rome teaches that these men become Christ, endlessly dispensing His sacrifice during the mass, in contradiction to Scripture which says there is only one mediator between God and men, Christ Jesus, and that His sacrifice is complete, having accomplished that which God ordained from before the foundation of the world. Believers have been redeemed.

Consider the fear a child must face when confronted by a pedophile he's been told is actually his Lord, God and Savior.

Consider how their lives and trust and faith are destroyed.

Consider the anger that results from being told to keep their mouth shut about the sexual abuse or face excommunication.

We wonder why there is so much homosexuality in society today. Look to Rome. They churn it out like butter.

Consider the anger that results from being told to keep their mouth shut about the sexual abuse or face excommunication.

Which the equivalent of threatening to send them to hell for eternity if they told.

And Catholic wonder why their church's reputation is tarnished.

They earned every bit of it with behavior like that.

It's inexcusable for any person to so abuse a position of authority and trust like that to satisfy their own perverted lusts and then throw it back on the children that they're the bad guys if they tell.

And we see Catholics blow it off because well, that was decades ago, they're adults or dead by now, the statute of limitations has run out, they're only after the money so they can buy yachts.

The abuse of these people continues today by more than the priests.

Little wonder there’s hardly ever any closure in sexual abuse cases. The assault on them never stops.

The secularists' promotion of homosexuality is the fault of "Rome"? Do you know how utterly absurd you sound?
