Even Archbishop Lefebvre wasn't dismissed from the clerical state, but then, what he did was far less egregious than Milingo's running around with the Moonies and "consecrating bihsops" who have no connection to, nor desire to be in communion with Rome.

Declaring his consecrations invalid, as opposed to merely illicit, indicates that Milingo had no intention of doing what the Church teaches regarding the holy orders of the episcopacy--in sum, he was not ordaining Catholic bishops, but bishops of an openly non-Catholic sect.

This is the end of the line for Milingo unless he repents.

It disturbs me that the Vatican’s statements keep referring to him as Archbishop Milingo. “Former Archbishop” or “disgraced” or “fallen Archbishop” would be more like it. I think the Vatican need not use the kid gloves here. People’s faith is at stake if they follow this guy.

Archbishop Lefebvre was right, even hardcore modernists could hardly justify removal.
