NIV Bible Tops List by Evangelical Leaders (Still the most preferred English Bible translation)

The New International Version of the Bible is by far the most preferred translation of the Scripture, according to a new survey of U.S. evangelical leaders.

More than 65 percent of the participating leaders named the NIV as their preferred Bible in a survey conducted by the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) in light of the NIV’s 30th anniversary this year.

“New Bible translations face large competition to gain a foothold in churches and homes but once established they have long staying power,” commented Leith Anderson, president of the NAE, which claims to represent 30 million evangelicals. “And, the NIV has maintained popularity and influence since it was published in 1978.”

The survey questioned the 100 members on the NAE board of directors, which included heads of evangelical denominations with about 45,000 local churches, executives of para-church organizations, and heads of Christian colleges.

In the survey, evangelical leaders were asked, “What is your preferred English Bible translation?” and were left to write in their response rather than being given a list to choose from.

Nearly half (49 percent) of those surveyed named only the NIV as their preferred translation, while another 18 percent listed a second translation along with the NIV for a total of 67 percent selecting the NIV in the survey.

Among those who chose two translations, the other version listed included the New Living Translation, The Message, the New English Bible, the New Testament in Modern English (J.B. Phillips, 1962) and the King James Version of the Bible.

One denominational leader listed the NIV, the New King James Version and the Contemporary Parallel Bible which shows multiple translations side-by-side for comparison.

But among those that do not prefer the NIV Bible, there was no clear preference in translation that dominated the field. Translations that were most mentioned were The New Living Translation, the New American Standard Bible, the Revised Standard Version, the English Standard Version and the New King James Version. There was also one response each for the Amplified Bible and Today’s New International Version (TNIV).

“Evangelicals agree that the Bible is the authoritative Word of God but have a long list of translations to pick from,” said Anderson. “Translations come and go but the Bible lasts forever.”

The NIV is the most popular modern English translation of the Bible in the world. It celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2008 with more than 300 million copies in print worldwide.

Scholars to Revise Popular NIV Bible

By Audrey Barrick
Christian Post Reporter

The popular New International Version (NIV) of the Bible will be revised for the first time in 25 years, global ministry Biblica announced on Tuesday.

The updated version is slated for release in 2011.

“We want to reach English speakers across the globe with a Bible that is accurate, accessible and that speaks to its readers in a language they can understand,” said Keith Danby, global president and CEO of Biblica.

First published in 1978 and revised in 1984, the NIV Bible was created out of a desire to provide a faithful translation of the Scriptures that spoke the language of 20th century English.

Although the NIV has become the most popular of all modern translations, it is becoming increasingly dated as time passes, Danby noted.

“If we want a Bible that English speakers around the world can understand, we have to listen to, and respect, the vocabulary they are using today,” he said.

An earlier attempt to update the NIV failed in 1997 after conservatives denounced plans to use gender-inclusive language, which would rid the Scriptures of male pronouns.

Five years later, Biblica, then known as International Bible Society, released an updated English translation called Today’s New International Version (TNIV) which was also met with criticism because of the use of gender neutral language.

Maureen Girkins, president and chief executive officer for Zondervan, which publishes the NIV and TNIV Bibles, acknowledged that the TNIV is divisive and said it will be taken off the market when the new revision is released, according to USA Today.

Those on the revising team cannot predict what will happen with gender usage when they begin their work on the new NIV. But along with re-examination on gender-related decisions, the team will be seeking feedback from the general public (nivbible2011.com).

Revisions will be made by members of the Committee on Bible Translation (CBT), an independent body of global biblical scholars that has the sole authority to update the text of the NIV.

“The new 2011 NIV is all about maintaining and enhancing the original values of the NIV for today’s readers,” said CBT Chairman Professor Douglas Moo.

“We’re looking for a translation that is above all accurate – that says what the original authors said in the way they would have said it had they been speaking in English to the global English-speaking audience today. We’re looking for a translation that offers clarity – where understanding comes naturally and readers can quickly grasp the original authors’ ideas and the cadence of their language. We’re looking for a translation that is suitable both for in-depth study and for outreach – a translation that Christians can share with their neighbors without hindrance whether they are experienced Bible readers or interested newcomers.”

The CBT is scheduled to finish its revision late next year. The updated NIV will be published in 2011, the year which marks the 400th anniversary of the King James Version.

“Our goal in the NIV Bible translation mirrors that of the 17th Century translators themselves: to produce a Bible that removes all unnecessary obstacles to comprehension by drawing on the best available scholarship,” said Moo.

More than 300 million copies of the NIV have been sold to people worldwide. Once the CBT completes its translation, Christian publisher Zondervan will produce print and digital versions of the updated NIV.

And yet it’s both inaccurate, and has actually excluded scripture.

I’m pretty sure there’s something in there about adding to or taking away. Anyone remember something like that?

There are two that I like better. They are “The Scriptures”, by the Institute for Scriptural Research, in South Africa. It is available from www.fossilizedcustoms.com
The other outstanding version is “The Restoration Scriptures, True Name Edition” available from www.yourarmstoisrael.org

What about the “TNIV”? Wouldn’t that qualify as a revision?

The NIV is ok - it is the translation we use to start each day’s homeschool lessons with.

But that being said, I have found that the ESV (English Standard Version) is a bit more true in translation, and the language as a bit more dignity to it without being “Old English-like”.

I have told several people lately that the ESV is what the New King James could have been - but fell short of.

I always approach a different translation with an eye to the question “WHY?”. I don’t buy into a translation just for the sake of “readability” - there has been enough dumbing down done already. Every single translation has been done with an agenda - some positive, and unfortunately - some negative.

Some of the worst “translations” (hard to use that word for some piles of drivel labeled as translations that have been put together) were done in the supposed name of reaching the world in a language they can understand. IN the process, not only the dignity of the text has been thrown out the window, but many liberties taken in translation that goes way beyond making it readable - including completely changing the working (in opposition to good Greek and Hebrew grammar rules).

So again, I return to the ESV for most of my personal devotional time. I preach from the KJV - again, I like the dignity of the language, and it is overall reasonably well translated. But I do find myself having to explain around some awkward translation points and the sometimes archaic language. But that is ok.

OH - and one other thing - the NIV was the first translation (the Holman Christian Standard being the second one) I had ever see use the word “beer”... usually in place of “strong drink” in the KJV.

I’m not sure if it is legitimate to compare the NIV with the KJV and then on that basis conclude that one adds or substracts from the original.

We have to compare BOTH to the MANUSCRIPTS WE HAVE and then determine which one is closest to the original.

Not an easy task I know, but methodologically, this for me is the right approach.

1985 Bible [Doubleday] / New Jerusalem Bible
1 1. The first edition of Tyndale’s New Testament definitely known was completed in 1525 and probably printed in 1526 before a revised edition was published by George Joye in 1534. Tyndale vigorously objected to Joye’s tampering with his translation and this issued the “diligently corrected” edition that was the basis of some forty subsequent editions of Tyndale’s New Testament
2 2. In 1557 the first pocket New Testament that gained wide circulation was published.
3 3. The Geneva Bible, 1560, went through 120 editions before 161 1, 140 editions prior to 1644, and 180 editions altogether.
4 4. In 1571 the Convocation of the Province of Canterbury ordered that copies of this edition should be placed in every cathedral, and as far as possible in every church (making it the “second” Authorized Version). The Bishops’ Bible was published in about nineteen editions over a period of thirty-four years, with the last edition coming in 1602; the New Testament continued to be published until 1633, in about nineteen editions.
5 5. Many hundreds of editions and revisions of the King James Version (Authorized Version) were made between 1611 and 1881, when the English Revised Version of the New Testament was published.
6 6. Henry Ainsworth was a Hebrew scholar whose rendition was too literal to be good English, but his Psalter came with the Plymouth Pilgrims to America.
7 7. The Geneva Bible had already lost ground to the King James Version: there were 182 printings of the King James Version and only 15 for the Geneva Bible.
8 8. Henry Hammond’s paraphrase went through numerous cditions until its final edition in four volumes (1845). It was the first example for the era of ’ paraphrases” in modern English Bible translations.
9 9. At least seventy “private” versions, not counting Roman Catholic ones, appeared between 1611 and 1881. Of those, only a few are represented here.
10 10. This anonymously published New Testament translation was the work of Daniel Mace, a Presbyterian minister, although it has been erroneously attributed to William Mace, a lecturer at Civil Law. The error has been perpetuated in the Catalogue of the British Museum, Cotton’s Editions of the English Blble, and even such reliable scholars as Luther Weigle and Hugh Pone have reproduced the error.
11 11. The subsequent editions of the Rheims-Douay-Challoner (R-D-C) Bible have been based on this 1749/50 revision by Richard Challoner.
12 12. Standard edition, Protestant Episcopal Church of America.
13 13. This Campbell, Macknight, Doddridge (C-M-D) version, first issued in 1818, continued to be published by Alexander Campbell.
14 14. The American Bible Society (ABS) originated in 1816.
15 15. The Tennessee Bible Society and the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) prepared this NT for use during the Civil War.
16 16. This NT translation was adopted by the English Revision Company as the basis for the RV (ERV) published in 1881.
17 17. Today’s English Version: Good News Bible appeared in parts until it was completed in 1976. Since its completion, the publisher prefers to call it the Good News Bible (GNB) rather than Today’s English Version (TEV), although both designations are used.
Geisler, N. L., & Nix, W. E. (1996, c1986). A general introduction to the Bible. Includes indexes. Includes a short-title checklist of English translations of the Bible (chronologically arranged). (Rev. and expanded.) (604). Chicago: Moody Press.

More than 65 percent of the participating leaders named the NIV as their preferred Bible in a survey conducted by the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) in light of the NIV’s 30th anniversary this year....

....The survey questioned the 100 members on the NAE board of directors, which included heads of evangelical denominations with about 45,000 local churches, executives of para-church organizations, and heads of Christian colleges.

The NAE prefers it, huh? That's another reason not to support the NIV!

I have been using the NASB for 25+ years and the ESV now for less than a year. I am liking the ESV more every day.

Personally, I use the NKJV for most of my study but I hold the NIV in high regard. My collection of Bibles (hard copy), ranging from the Tyndale NT 1526 in the orig spelling to the NET Bible numbers about 100 Bibles and New Testaments. When compared to the languages of the Bible and using the N/A 27 and USB 4 greek manuscripts of the New Testament, the NIV actually is a very good translation.

The thing that most critics of the NIV either don’t understand or care to ignore is the fact that the NIV is a start from scratch translation from the Greek and Hebrew into mid 20th century English, rather than a revision of an older translation. For that reason, the NIV doesn’t have any kind of “old time feel”. But as far as accuracy goes, it very good in the hands of a mid-20th century, North American reader.

I have found the NIV to be very useful for group Bible studies. The NIV is easy to read and effectively communicates basic Biblical concepts to people who are new to the Faith. That is the main reason Evangelicals like it. It’s a good “outreach Bible”.

If you want to parse text then you probably want to use a different translation. One I’ve always liked is the New King James.

I wonder how many versions of updated language there are in Shakspeare’s plays.

I kind of like the old language, but then I was raised with it. Nothing wrong with newer versions except the new words are unfamiliar and sound strange.

Our local preacher read a pamphlet on salvation using Bible verses from many versions. I had a hard time understanding what he was saying till I looked them up in my KJV. Then I realized he was saying things I already knew, just in different words.

Tyndale's bible and the Geneva Bible are pretty easy to get hold of.

I certainly agree with your comment. I even have to be very careful when I read my 1560 Geneva. After using it a while, it becomes easier to read. ESV & NASB (printed and electronic versions) are the ones I frequent.

That's funny -- most young people today would not even understand what the King James version is saying with its 17th century style English.
