Chief Islamic Judge of the Palestinian Authority, Sheikh Tayseer Rajab Tamimi, launched a poisonous verbal attack at Israel at a Monday night gathering attended by Pope Benedict XVI.
In a meeting with organizations involved in inter-religious dialogue at the Notre Dame Jerusalem Center, Tamimi called upon Muslims and Christians to unite against what he said were the murderous Israelis.
Taking the podium after the pope without being on the original list of speakers scheduled for the evening, Tamimi accused Israel of murdering women and children in Gaza and making Palestinians refugees, and declared Jerusalem the eternal Palestinian capital.
Following the diatribe and before the meeting was officially over, the pope exited the premises. Army Radio reported that the pope shook Tamimi's hand before walking out.
Minutes after the embarrassing occurrence, Father Federico Lombardi, director of the Holy See press office, released a response to the incident.
"The intervention of Sheikh Tayseer Tamimi was not previewed by the organizers of the interreligious meeting that took place at Notre Dame Centre in Jerusalem," the message read. "In a meeting dedicated to dialogue, this intervention was a direct negation of what [it] should be," it continued.
"We hope that such an incident will not damage the mission of the Holy Father aiming at promoting peace and interreligious dialogue, as he has clearly affirmed in many occasions in this pilgrimage," Father Lombardi added.
"We hope also that interreligious dialogue in the holy land will not be damaged by this incident," the message concluded.
Last month, Tamimi reissued a warning to Palestinians against selling their homes or properties to Jews, saying those who violated the order would be accused of "high treason" - a charge that carries the death penalty.

The Pope was smart to get out of there ~
So, what the guy is saying is he doesn’t want peace he wants war.....representing the religion of peace?
Obviously someone intended for that speaker to be there. It didn’t happen by accident...
Now THIS is a pope that needs an army. I really like this guy.
this pope should not have shooked that idiots hand on his way out, rather he should have given him the traditional Italian, up yours.
Why did he wait for the nut to finish his rant and why did he shake the nut’s hand?!??!!!?!
He’s not Italian.
You broke the code.
Do you think the POPE is some street punk??? Some of you people HATE the Pope while DEMANDING he work MIRACLES and WALKS ON WATER!
Hey, if it was Obama, he would have just sat there an smiled and would have rec’d a book on jihad as a gift.
The Pope is getting a valuable education.
Back away from the coffee
Sheikh Tayseer Rajab Tamimi launches verbal attacks against Israel and the Pope leaves.
Daniel Ortega, for 50 minutes, lambastes the United States in a conference and 0bama sits there like a scared little schoolboy.
Bit of a refresher:
(1) There never was a Palestinian state or a Palestinian nation. There are no Palestinian people, per se. Rather, these are Arabs living in a region that historically has been called many things, including “Palestine.”
2) Israel did not go to war against a Palestinian state and occupy its land. Rather, Israel was attacked by six Arab countries at once. She defended herself, defeated her attackers, and won the so-called territories, not from the Palestinians, but from Jordan and Egypt.
3) Jerusalem was never the capital of any state but Israel. It was certainly never the capital of a country that never existed. Why should the Palestinians get any part of it? Because they want it? Because they have terrorists?
4) Jerusalem, under the current Israeli control, is a free and open city. Israel, as a democracy, guarantees freedom of religion within its borders. Contrast this fact with areas that have come under Palestinian occupation. What percentage of Christians have left in recent years because they cannot stand the harassment and persecution?
5) Most Arabs living in Palestine today are not indigenous to the region. It was not until after the Jews had changed deserts and swamps into a productive and thriving land that the Arabs started migrating there. (For example, Arafat himself was born and raised in Cairo, Egypt.)
“Why did he wait for the nut to finish his rant and why did he shake the nuts hand?!??!!!?!”
The report the Pope shook his hand came from the mideast. Take it with a BIG grain of salt, especially if reported by muslims.
“There never was a Palestinian state or a Palestinian nation.”
Absolutely right. There has NEVER been a kingdom of, republic of, democratic socialist peoples’ republic of, or any other than a British mandate of.. Palestine. It has NEVER existed as an entity. Everytime the parts have been put in place for Palestinian statehood, the Palis F it up. Every single time.
“declared Jerusalem the eternal Palestinian capital.”
when was it the capital of “Palestine”?
The nut was no doubt speaking in Arabic and the translators were probably hustling to keep up, since the guy was not on the list and therefore would not have submitted his talk in advance (normally, in the case of a formal address, translators are given a copy in advance to familiarize themselves with it, although the person usually adds little changes when he actually delivers it). I doubt that the talk was very long, and I’m sure the Pope was confused by the whole thing.
As for shaking his hand, that is simply a way of saying goodbye among Italians (or people accustomed to an Italian culture) and indicated that the Pope was leaving and not simply going out for a glass of water or something.
