Bigotry against Mormons apparently acceptable in Utah LDS (OPEN)
Salt Lake Tribune ^ | March 20, 2009

Posted on 03/21/2009 8:22:38 AM PDT by greyfoxx39

Here is the response of a Utahn commenting on a Salt Lake Tribune online blog concerning HBO's attempt in its series "Big Love" to increase its revenues by publicly insulting the religious sensitivity of a minority religion: "Anything that gets the LDS "church's magical Mormon underwear in a twist is all right with me!!"

I write for a regional newspaper in Iowa. During the last election campaign, I suggested that Mitt Romney lost the Iowa caucus to Mike Huckabee primarily due to anti-Mormon bigotry. A reader argued that my opinion had no credence because I was a lay leader in the LDS Church.

The writer was either suggesting that I knew exactly what I was talking about and was therefore credible, or that I shouldn't be believed because I was a Mormon, which implies that the writer was a bigot.

-SNIP-

It is obvious to an outsider that Utah, or at least Salt Lake City, has within itself a deeply held culture of bigotry. A bigotry so ingrained in the cultural norm that the readers posting comments to the newspaper's blogs, apparently believing they are freethinking and ironic, are saying things online that would never be allowed into print if written about other groups.

Open threads are a town square. Antagonism though not encouraged, should be expected

Posters may argue for or against beliefs of any kind. They may tear down other’s beliefs. They may ridicule.

On all threads, but particularly “open” threads, posters must never “make it personal.” Reading minds and attributing motives are forms of “making it personal.” Making a thread “about” another Freeper is “making it personal.”

When in doubt, review your use of the pronoun “you” before hitting “enter.”

Like the Smoky Backroom, the conversation may be offensive to some.

Thin-skinned posters will be booted from “open” threads because in the town square, they are the disrupters.

Mormons don't do this-

Mormons don't do this -

Mormons don't do this -

Mormons seem a little strange maybe -- but why the hate?

This is interesting because I would have assumed in Salt Lake that anyone who was not LDS would be in such a minority that they would be the ones who felt (or imagined) bigotry.

When I lived in Utah (Provo-Orem, not SLC) I saw a lot more bigotry toward NON-Mormons, and especially Christians, then I ever saw against the LDS. And I was LDS then.

Now when I am in Utah, I make sure to wear a very large Cross necklace and a tank top, lest I be mistaken for active LDS.

I have been spit upon for doing this and accused of antagonism. Religious bigotry cuts both ways in Utah.

Last I checked, SLC proper was 50% (maybe less) active LDS.

I didn’t realize that - I thought it was more like 80% Mormon - has this been a big change or was I just wrong?

“I have been spit upon for doing this and accused of antagonism”

Only a psycho would spit on someone, so are you trying to say that the spitee was sanctioned by the LDS church?

“I saw a lot more bigotry toward NON-Mormons, and especially Christians,”

That is funny, because all the Mormons I know consider themselves Christian. Telling fibs ruins your credibility.

Actually, I would say that SLC is only about 35% active LDS people. Haven’t you realized that libs take over big cities?

I try to live in my own little bubble in the suburbs of Houston.... having lived near Philly and now Houston, I realize the news is nothing more than rapes, fires, shootings and corrupt city government... I watch reruns of Everyone Loves Raymond instead... ;^)

Rural areas have a much higher percentage of LDS. SLC is urban and had major economic growth in the 1990’s, I suspect that had quite a bit to do with the change in demographics.

I do not believe that it was in any way sanctioned by the LDS church. That does not change how they feel.

I am not fibbing, so no credibility issues. And I know that the LDS consider themselves TO BE THE ONLY TRUE CHRISTIANS, which is what in part contributes to distrust and hatred against us “gracers”.

I did however word it as I see it now (Mormons are NOT Christians). Perhaps better phrasing would have been: “I saw a lot more bigotry toward NON-Mormons, and especially EVANGELICAL Christians.”

Better?

Really, that low? Interesting I did not realize it had dropped so low. What about Provo-Orem? Any idea?

The term "fib" like the term "lie" implies the intent to decieve which is reading the mind of another Freeper and therefore "making it personal."

Discuss the issues all you want, but do not make it personal.

Aww. Thank you. Small minded people happen.

And it is not just LDS, I have experienced hatred from many groups (especially gays) because I boldly proclaim Christ and Him Crucified.

And I NEVER said it was ALL LDS. It is not, by far.

I still have many LDS friends (although some never admit they are friends with an “apostate” lest they be accused of sympathizing). Oh well.
