SAN ANTONIO – Pastor John Hagee, the internationally known radio/TV evangelist, was recovering after undergoing open heart surgery. A spokesman for Hagee's Cornerstone Church, Juda Engelmayer, said the successful procedure was done Thursday at a San Antonio hospital.

Engelmayer also told the San Antonio Express-News that the 68-year-old minister is expected to be away from the pulpit for about a month.

His 30-year-old son, associate pastor Matt Hagee, will take over church operations until the elder minister returns.

Engelmayer said a routine checkup revealed a need for the heart surgery and Hagee "came through great." The name of the hospital was not disclosed.

Hagee founded the nondenominational, evangelical Cornerstone Church. According to its Web site, has more than 19,000 active members. Hagee also founded Christians United for Israel.

“His 30-year-old son, associate pastor Matt Hagee, will take over church operations until the elder minister returns.”

Assuming, of course, that he doesn’t have a heart attack of his own. He’s about 100 pounds overweight, like Dad. I’m sorry and I don’t wish them ill health, but I just see the whole family as gluttonous manipulators of soul-hungry people.

I must agree to a point. Most evangelists..and I speak from experience as my father was a pastor...are basically motivational speakers. They say what the congregation wants to hear. Bad thing is the people attach themselves to the preacher or denomination overtop of attaching themselves to Christ!

I used to listen some to Hagee, but one time on TV saw him say something I did not agree with .He was saying God had “punished” New Orleans for it’s evil ways with Katrina and went on to declare that he “dared anyone” to disagree. Well, good thing I wasn’t in that audience because I would ahve stood up and disagreed for all of Hagee’s sheeple to see. That was quite arrogant to me. I never read where Christ “dared” anyone to disagree. He simply put the TRUTH out there and no one could really say a word anyhow.

All that said, I do hope he makes a recovery and maybe tones it down a bit???

“Business” is the proper word, I’m afraid. Example: friends who joined briefly told me that the intake person told them the church would really prefer that the use the church’s CPA members to do their taxes (unspoken: “So we call tell how much you ought to be giving to the church”). Pretty sad.
