We have an epidemic of depression in our culture, and while risking the possibility of being misunderstood, I suggest this is largely due to irresponsibility, not doing what we know we ought to do.

While I would agree that not doing what we know we ought often contributes, if not causes, depression, we need to be careful about making that judgment too quickly.

People also often suffer depression because of deep heart wounds that haven't healed. If they are then accused of being depressed because they aren't doing what they ought, we would only be adding to their pain.
