22. Bella [B+]

Note that a number of the movies on the All Time [Star Wars Trilogy, Lord of the Rings, etc] would be good movies for Catholics to see [in this poster's opinion -- topher]

TOPICS: Catholic
KEYWORDS: adoption; bella; boxoffice; movie; moviereview; profamily; prolife; topten
Because of the recommendations of Cardinals Rigali and O'Malley, as well as the recommendations of other Archbishops/Bishops to see this movie, I believe this worthy of discussion on Catholic.

Missing is Golden Compass, which Catholics can influence the vote by just flunking the movie without seeing it.

I think that is fair...

On the other hand, those who have not rated Bella can do so on Yahoo! (and also Box Office Mojo)

If we get the Evangelicals to rate Golden Compass negatively and Bella positively, it will protect our children and help our children... -- in my opinion...

Basically these ratings are driven by people on the Internet.

I find it interesting, for that reason, that Bella is ahead of Matrix, as computer geeks and other young people would flock to Matrix...

Additionally, I am hopeful since Catholic writer T.R.R. Tolkien's trilogy got 3 of the top 10 -- #2, #7, and #10.

Discussion on our Catholic faith, and some of these movies?

I saw Bella again today. It was special because it was the Feast of the Immaculate Conception...

In one scene, I saw a picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe and also a statue of Mary in the same scene in the movie...

What a blessing!!!

Flunking Golden Compass without seeing it is fair -- it is a fair way to help the movie go down the tubes... Currently Golden Compass is not doing well opening weekend... Maybe the Christians have gotten the word out.

FLUNKING the movie makes people leery of seeing the movie -- so it is a way to protest...

Thoughts???

Besides loving it, would you recommend it to good Christians/Catholics as a movie that has a positive influence.

For example, Bella has a prolife/profamily theme, as well as showing really how one Christian could help another person when they are facing crisis in their lives...

Golden Compass has a C+ rating currently by users, which is not good for the movie.

If Catholics and Christians can help review this movie (trash this movie), it will help prevent sales of the book from increasing, and thus going out as Christmas gifts to children...

1. Haven't seen Bella. Will check it out on Netflix.

2. Sickened by the fact that those stupid Hobbit movies are on the list.

3. Made pale green by the fact that Shawshank in #1. It is popular with middle-aged folks for some reason. Since I have nine years until middle age, maybe I will understand then.

Bella is playing at more theaters than Lions for Lambs.

Lions for Lambs was a big dollar production that opened at 2,200 theaters. It is rapidly fading from the face of cinema billboards -- about 350 theaters hosting this dog of a movie...

Bella has been quite steady and seemed to be a long lived movie -- it is in the Seventh Week from opening.

It would be interesting to see if this movie is still playing around OSCAR time -- or it might start playing after OSCAR time.

I don't know if it will be nominated for any OSCARS, but BEST MOVIE and BEST DIRECTOR come to mind. BEST ACTOR and BEST ACTRESS might also be possible because after my second viewing of this film, I could find no problems with any areas of the film.

Even the SOUND TRACK was better than I thought because I could understand more with the 2nd viewing.

Maybe those voting on the ACADEMY AWARDS might want to see this film twice...

Winning OSCARs would mean that it might be re-released because of interest generated by the awards ceremony...

It should be noted that the ratings have changed.

This can happen if there is an organized effort by pro-abortion BABY KILLING groups or LIBERAL GROUPS such as HOMOSEXUALS who oppose strong FAMILIES in America.

There are those who lurk at FREEREPUBLIC to cause damage.

Nevertheless, once the movie hits DVD, groups such as the KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS can purchase this movie (multiple copies) and donate it to local libraries...

If you think they are movies about hobbits, then there’s not a lot anyone can do to help you out. Plus, we don’t know which way you came in...

One interesting note is that the ANTI-CHRISTIAN film Golden Compass was released this weekend to 3,500 theaters -- almost twice the number of theaters as the BOMB Lions for Lambs.

It might be interesting to see if Bella proves to be a David versus Goliath by continuing a strong but steady showing at a strategic number of theaters across the country.

Bella is playing near the top number of theaters that it achieved at its maximum -- 402 versus 457.

This means Golden Compass is almost playing at 10 times the number of theaters.

This number might rapidly decrease (as it did Lions for Lambs)

What is the “other” current Pro-life movie, mentioned on FR last week?

I am not aware of any.

Before Bella, there was the movie (released only DVD that I am aware of) A Distant Thunder.

There are also BLACK AND WHITE movies that are prolife.

One great movie is These Wilder Years with some top notch actors/actresses: Jimmy Cagney, Barbara Stanwyck, and Walter Pidgeon. It is not exactly a Casablanca film, but there are some twists and turns one does not expect.

And it deals with a number of prolife issues and adoption...

But the character in this movie (Suzie, played by Betty Lou Keim) steals the show. She plays a sixteen year pregnant girl with no place to turn, except to Barbara Stanwyck (a sort of CPC type person in the 1950s). But Suzie earns her keep by working for Barbara in her business...

I believe Youtube has the Star Wars Vs. LOTR debate scene from “Clerks II.” I am on Randall’s side in that debate. ;-)

Gotta admit that was funnier than hell. 'Walking, walking, walking - even the #@^%*& trees were walking.'

In all honesty, as much as I love the movies, it seems dopey to me to include them three times on the list. J.R.R. was cheezed at splitting the story up into three book releases - the thing was meant to be a single story. (although I sense that you think some level of hell punishes by making sinners sit thru all three flicks in one sitting....) Seems to me one story ought have one entry; not three. If they split "Gone With the Wind" at the intermission it shouldn't get two listings.

What about Star Wars first Trilogy? Should it have been one movie?

Technically, it could not have been -- George Lucas was fed with the first Star Wars movie. For him it was so bad that he was sitting at a restaurant across from the main Theater in Hollywood showing Star Wars, with his first wife.

They thought it was unbelievable that there was so much commotion over that film (the first Star Wars)...

What is the “other” current Pro-life movie, mentioned on FR last week?

I think I came across the film you referred to.

It is called Noelle, but it is all about two bad priests -- one who comes to a town to close the church the week before Christmas.

It is some sort of Protestant Christmas movie that from what I gather is anti-Catholic.

As for pro-life, one of the priests becomes a priest because he urged a girlfriend to have an abortion at one time.

In the Catholic Church, one does not become a priest unless they are called to do so.

This is also a love story, as both priests fall in love with the same woman.

Noelle is not doing too well in the theaters, and may have already stopped playing in theaters (it started the first week in 200+ theaters, then dropped to 64 for the second week... Don't know about this week, but it may only gross about $300,000 total at the US Box Office...

Noelle is probably the opposite of Going My Way with Bing Crosby. Bing Crosby plays a priest that does all the right things, and bails a parish out of trouble...
