I can see the finish line!

I can see the finish line. For three and a half decades, we have marched uphill in Washington on the coldest day of the year: Jan. 22 – the anniversary of Roe v. Wade – all the way to the Supreme Court building. Pro-lifers know it well: As you make your way up Constitution Avenue, you look back to see the tens of thousands who stand with us. As you turn the corner, you see the goal: the U.S. Supreme Court.

We have now turned the corner, and I can SEE the finish line. That Supreme Court is right now within our grasp.

As a college kid speaking at youth rallies and the Memorials for Life, I said when Roe v. Wade is overturned, I'm having the victory party. And many in the movement politely smiled, inwardly thinking they would never live to see that party. Oh, we're gonna see it; and we're gonna see it soon.

Then there's a crowd in Washington whom I affectionately refer to as the "status-quoers." They're happy with the crumbs, the parental consents, the partial birth abortion bans, but they fight real efforts to stop the killing completely. We've waited long enough. After 34 years, the time has come.

Having spent two-thirds of my life in the pro-life movement, I've felt all the emotions: the dashed hopes, the disappointments, the overwhelmed, taken for granted, frustrated, used, devastated, skeptical, tired, wanting to quit, try to squeak out one more election exhaustion. But there is something different now. Something that can move even those who were so disgusted that they actually sat it out in 2006, something the status-quoers didn't expect. We have turned the corner on this issue, and I'm telling you, I can SEE the finish line.
