.- The Latin Mass will be made available to those Vermont Catholics who seek it, Bishop Salvatore Matano announced in a July 6th letter to the faithful in his diocese.
The bishop made the announcement, following Pope Benedict XVIs recent universal approval of the 1962 Latin Mass.
"I will consult with our council of priests ... to determine the most suitable manner for making the 'extraordinary form' of the Sacred Liturgy available to those who request it," wrote Bishop Matano.
Latin Masses will be offered occasionally around the state based on worshippers' requests.
However, Fr. John McDermott, chancellor for the Vermont diocese, said last week that the church needs time to prepare to offer the Latin Mass. Many of the young priests do not know Latin and the older priests would have to brush up on it, he said. Other priests and choirs will have to be trained, reported The Burlington Free Press.
Until the training is complete, the diocese is urging churches to have sections of the Mass sung in Latin where the request is made.
Following the Second Vatican Council, the Latin Mass became the extraordinary form of celebrating the Liturgy and required a bishops permission to be used. The ordinary form of the Liturgy became the Roman Missal of Paul VI, which switched the language of celebration to the vernacular, among other changes.
I know of one freeper who will be singing the Halleluia chorus tonight :-)

In his statement, D'Arcy indicates he has invited the Fraternity of St. Peter to send a priest to the diocese "to help us in the wider use of the older form of Mass" -- also known as the Tridentine Mass.
Isn't this the same Bishop D'Arcy who used to be in Boston until he was "exiled" for insisting that priests who molested should not be sent back into parishes?
I am the only bishop in Wisconsin who does not now give permission for the Mass of Blessed John XXIII, as I did not feel the adequate catechesis was in place, Bishop Robert Morlino of Madison told the Register. But now that the Holy Father has indicated his desire for this extraordinary form to be more widely used, not only will the decree be implemented, but I intend to take the lead. I hope myself to celebrate this Mass, through which I found my own vocation.
A bishop who respects the wishes of the Pope! Will wonders never cease?
Vatican, Jul. 16, 2007 (CWNews.com) - Pope Benedict XVI, who recently issued a motu proprio allowing all Catholic priests to celebrate the old Latin Mass, uses the older ritual himself for his private Mass, CWN has learned.Informed sources at the Vatican have confirmed reports that the Holy Father regularly celebrates Mass using the 1962 Roman Missal.

Most interesting! That story deserves its own thread. Will you post it?
Sure! Will you ping your list? (I have only a shortish ping list that’s several years out of date.)
Great! Now if he could only do something about Father O’Brien at Notre Dame.
We had a new priest tonight at mass, he looked to be 30 or younger. He did a great job, like all FSSP priests I have seen. BTW - the FSSP could probably use some financial help to meet the needs of training priests interested in the Latin mass.

Otherwise, I'm sure a deal could be worked out . . . ;-)

The Spirit will go where It wills!
people who say the Latin mass is only for people over 50 haven’t been to Latin mass lately. The masses at our parish are full of 20 and 30 year olds, and very large young families with very well-behaved children.
And there has been the occasional story in the press about the interest of young people in the old Mass.
And Pope John Paul said the N.O. for his private masses, but in the ad orientem posture!
Seems like we need to get a prayer list going for certain bishops who need a particular tap on the shoulder from the Holy Spirit: O’Malley, Brown, Mahony, Vlazny, Trautman, Skylstad...
I didn’t know that! Thanks!
