(KDKA) PITTSBURGH A new credit card is enabling people to give back.
The World Mission Visa Card will be sponsored by the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, which is part of the Catholic Church.
It's most for those who want to support the missionary activity of the church; so Catholic yes, but focused, The Rev. Ronald Lengwen, from the Pittsburgh Catholic Diocese, said.
To promote the Visa card, more than one million Catholics in the United States will be contacted by a direct mail campaign.
With the card, 1 percent of all purchases will be donated to the Propagation of the Faith to support charities around the world.
While there is no annual fee, interest rates can be as low as 7.99 percent all the way up to 29.99 percent depending on ones credit score or default rate.
I think it's business as usual. As I read the description of the program, if you default that 1 percent is taken away, Lengwen said.
Some people like Carole Clifford think the card would make giving back more convenient. Yeah, I think it's kind of a painless way to do it and help the missions, she said.
But others see the drawbacks. I think the credit card market is over extended and it's too far reaching for most people, Debbie Hojonski, from the South Side, said.
Of course, you don’t get the tax deduction for the charity. You are better off getting cash back on your discover card and donating that cash if you want to.
Thanks, Debbie. I wonder what she means by "it's too far reaching"?
nothing like contributing to charity while being complicit in usury!
