Celebrities Joke About Archbishop's Boycott of Catholic Fundraiser

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Celebrities at a Catholic fund-raiser headlined by singer Sheryl Crow have joked about St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke's boycott of the event.

Burke resigned last week from the board of the Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center Foundation because Crow has publicly supported legal abortion and embryonic stem-cell research. At the fund-raiser for the charity's Bob Costas Cancer Center, Costas joked that Crow was there for three reasons: to help children, put on a good show and, quote: "get me excommunicated."

Comedian Billy Crystal said of the archbishop, "I respect his right to choose, his right to choose not to be here." Audience members gave Sheryl Crow a standing ovation, and she thanked them for their support.

I’m not even catholic and I find this offensive. Given that the whole “Cardinal Glennon” organization is supposed to be rooted in RCC values, how on earth could it have gotten hijacked by a bunch of amoral, God-hating libs?

I used to wonder how so many philanthropic organizations moved so far left... far beyond the vision of benefactors that established them. The answer dawned on me a few years ago. Godless libs have no compunction about lying. They feel no shame or disgrace in saying, doing or appearing to be something other than themselves (a conservative, perhaps). The end justifies any means to them. So they get themselves into these positions dishonestly, and then proceed to exclude decent people from any position of influence. Decent people are easy to identify - they don’t lie about who they are.

And their actions prove that he was right in boycotting the event.

From your keyboard to God’s eyes. IMHO, Abp. Burke would be an excellent choice. Has St. Louis ever been a cardinatial see?

That’s a good point. They really do start to veer off to the left almost immediately.

And for some reason the left in this country (well, everywhere) is firmly wedded to population control and eugenics, so these organizations often end up adopting positions that simply can’t be supported by Catholics.

But of course since so many of these Catholics are by now more Dem than Catholic, this doesn’t bother them.

I have also given thought to the leftward drift of many philanthropic organizations. My conclusion is the tolerance of conservatives and the intolerance of liberals. On boards on which I serve the conservative members will welcome anyone who can serve the organization. However, liberals will often not support a conservative for political reasons, which they often do not express. Thus, over time, the groups’ leadership becomes more liberal until the liberals are in charge. Then, no conservative is tolerated.

Great point. Perhaps we conservatives ought to consider the character of those on the left more. Character includes one’s beliefs, as those beliefs will drive an organization toward or away from its mission.

I did a little research the other day on the "John T. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation".

They're big supporters of public TV, and (much, much worse) big supporters of pro-aborts of various kinds, notably the utterly evil "Catholics for a Free Choice".

Here's the interesting thing. John T. made his money running Banker's Life and Casualty insurance company, which he built from a tiny company into a huge one. John T. was very, very conservative.

He and his wife both died in the late 70's early 80's timeframe. The charity that his money went to found was rapidly taken over by the extreme left, through the machinations of his sons (who were the stereotypical left-wing spoiled rich kids) and others.

So now you have the oddity of a charity founded by, and named for, a solidly conservative businessman being the financial engine behind a number of toxic liberal projects.

Sorry, that’s “John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation”.

Sadly it's not such an oddity. This is the reason that Bill Gates recently announced that his "Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation" will spend all of its assets and disband in no more than 50 years. Even if it were to be taken over by radicaleftists, the damage they can inflict will be contained, unlike those of the Fords or Rockefellers, etc.
