I really do hate to say, “I told you so,” to a Pope, so I won’t, but I remember being shocked when Archbishop Levada was picked. There was no way that was going to work out.

The race for 452 Madison seems to have begun -- not in New York, however, but in Rome. And the prospect tipped to take it in recent days is a genuine bolt from the blue: Cardinal William Levada, the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

New York is in desperate need of a strong Catholic leader. The last one was Cardinal O'Connor, an outspoken man who stood up to the politicians and those in the pews. Interesting to watch how this turns out.

Thank you for posting this thread, Frank!

Maybe the Holy Father ought to appoint a foreigner, a complete outsider?

how about this instead: Military Archbishop O’Brien for NY, early retirement for LA’s Cardinal, and Levada sent there.

Priest on the rise: Monsignor Stuart Swetland, Director of Pre-Theology and Homiletics at Mount Saint Mary's Seminary in Emmittsburg, Maryland. Monsignor Swetland is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis where he graduated at the top of his Class. While in England studying as a Rhodes Scholar, Monsignor Swetland, who had been raised as a Lutheran, came into the Catholic Church. My Diocese of Harrisburg has Bishop Rhoades who came via Mt. Saint Mary. Swetland is very impressive.
