Every time humanity degrades itself, he exacts a toll on creation and degrades creation in the process.
This was the message of Vatican Representative Papal Nuncio Archbishop Fernando Filoni as he declared the environment to be exposed to serious threats due to peoples lifestyle.
We are witnesses of our own greed: major oil spills, global warming and the greenhouse effect, forest degradation, soil erosion, famine, flood, heat waves, and more are frank reminders that as His masterpieces, we are responsible for all the other things the Almighty God has gifted us with, he said.
In a message celebrating the Cleanup the World and the International Coastal Clean Up, Filoni said Gods gift to humanity had been continuously exposed to serious risks because of the peoples lack of respect and negligence to preserve the environment.
Extravagance, decadence, wastefulness and even the search for power, disorder creation to a scale that is unimaginable are just some of the ways that contributed to the degradation and destruction of out environment, he added.
Citing the oil spill in Guimaras Island where precious corals and other marine lives were destroyed after the oil tanker Solar 1 sank last month, the Papal nuncio said its high time now that the Filipinos be more active and take part in preserving Gods gift for the sake of future generations by not squandering the resources and using them with respect to their nature and in conscientious solidarity with our fellow human beings.
Let us bind ourselves to protect what God has given us and so use the gift wisely, Filoni added.
World Cleanup month in the Philippines is celebrated by virtue of Presidential Proclamation 244 while Presidential Proclamation 990 has declared September 17 to 23 as Clean and Green Week and September 24 to 30 as Urban Pest Control Week.
