Just a thought....

Matthew 6:5-8

And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask Him.

< looks around >

I don't see anybody praying in public here. Do you?

Or do you object to a call to unite in prayer for a special intention?

If that is the case, do you object to the frequent prayer threads on FR?

The Lord's point is that we should pray with the right intention. It's not just about the location.

I suppose you think that Jesus' repetitive prayer during His agony in the Garden of Gethsemani was vain repetition.

"And going a little further, he fell upon his face, praying, and saying: My Father, if it be possible, let this chalice pass from me. Nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. And he cometh to his disciples, and findeth them asleep, and he saith to Peter: What? Could you not watch one hour with me? Watch ye, and pray that ye enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh weak. Again the second time, he went and prayed, saying: My Father, if this chalice may not pass away, but I must drink it, thy will be done. And he cometh again and findeth them sleeping: for their eyes were heavy. And leaving them, he went again: and he prayed the third time, saying the selfsame word." Matthew 26:39-44

That entire section of Matthew is among my favorites. When Jesus is speaking about charity, prayer, etc he speaks about being modest and discrete. Imagine such an issue so important to God that Jesus addresses the issue. I so enjoy this part of the new testament.

use not vain repetitions

This is a mistranslation in the KJV. The Greek word is battalogeo, which does not mean "repetition" so much as it means "babbling".

Virtually no other translation translates battalogeo as "repetition," and that's why. It's wrong.

There is nothing wrong with repetitive prayers. Some of the Psalms are very repetitive.
