Music to Remember Terri Schiavo

I wanted to consider the idea of music to help us remember the horror of this time last year when Terri Schiavo died in a cruel and horrible way.

Some of these songs were mentioned by other FReepers in the threads I read last year (I hadn't joined yet).

So I make my contributions in the order I placed them on my tape (I use ancient technology). Terri's death was followed by the passing of Pope John Paul II and in some ways I combined the music to also remember his life and ministry.

So here is the list:

1. The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia-Vicki Lawrence(That corrupt judge with "bloodstains on his hands".)

2. Fire and Rain-James Taylor (Speaks for itself-the pain of that day, 3-31-05)

3. Bridge Over Troubled Water-Simon and Garfunkel (For this time when we all were "down and out")

4. Candle In The Wind-Elton John (They media exploited her like Marilyn Monroe and almost all of them were pro-death)

5. Vincent-Don McClean (Suicide here, but the sad tone and the admiration for the deceased spoke to me)

6. Sing Me Back Home-Merle Haggard (The condemned prisoner going "to his doom".)

7. Man in Black-Johnny Cash (Cash was a little anti-war here, but he draws us to "listen to the words that Jesus said" and it was a time to wear black.)

8. The Lord's Prayer-Sister Janet Mead (It speaks for itself, it was a Top 10 hit in 1974)

9. Forgive-Steve Taylor (Christian music from the 1980's , Taylor recalls Pope John Paul's tearful meeting with the man who tried to kill him as part of this song)

10. He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother-The Hollies ("Many a winding road that leads us to who knows where..")

11. A World of Our Own-The Seekers (Oh how I felt like "living in a world of our own.")

12. Greenfields-The Brothers Four ("Gone are the greenfields where we used to roam")

13. The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald-Gordon Lightfoot (A tale of a real and dark disaster)

14. Would You Lay With Me-Tanya Tucker (Recorded in the 1970's, a country hit with these lyrics among others "When my lips are dry, would you wet them dear")

15. Shower the People-James Taylor ("Shower the people you love with love, show them the way that you feel")

16. Daniel-Elton John ("I miss Daniel, must be the clouds in my eyes")

17. Judas Kiss-Petra (Christian music from the 1980's, "I wonder how it makes you feel when they willingly disobey". "Good people" stood by at the execution, were silent or only acted for political purposes and not out of conviction)

18. Asleep in the Light-Keith Green (A Christian music "prophet" with "how can you be so dead, when you've been so well fed" among other things.

19. Crying in the Chapel-Elvis Presley (A song played to remember Pope John Paul on some radio stations in Ireland last year)

20. Green Green Grass of Home-Tom Jones (Porter Wagoner song covered by Jones with a story of a condemned prisoner)

21. What the World Needs Now-Jackie DeShannon (Oh how true at that awful time)

22. Wings of a Dove-Ferlin Husky ("On the wings of snow white dove, He sends His pure sweet love")

23. We Shall Not Be Moved-The Seekers (1960's folk music that had real meaning, civil disobedience like we saw at the hospice was accompained by this song back in the 60's. I admire everyone that did it and was saddened when one "Christian college" tried to distance themselves from a faculty member who got arrested there carrying water to Terri.)

24. The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down-Joan Baez (No doubt part of her anti-war repetoire of 1970, but messages like "it was the winter of 65, we were hungry, just barely alive")

25.Jive Talkin-The Bee Gees (I wanted to go upbeat and try to go on with a tune about "Jive Talkin" which we heard plenty of from Felos, Michael, politicians and media here)

The Tanya Tucker song may have a line or two that would fit the occasion but the Kiss reference was over the top and meant as a poke in the eye to those who wish to remember Ms. Schindler and The Pope. ....JMHO....

I wonder if you ever considered the meaning of "Rest in Peace" as you dance in her ... shadow? If that doesn't make the point, I wonder if you ever consider the meaning of "Requiescat in Pace" as you dance in her blood? Move on, there's nothing new here.

I've been described as many things in my lifetime.

One person I worked with called me a "progressive fundamentalist" and it is in that spirit (if a label is to be applied) that I operate.

The real me may offend the "liberal","humanist" and also the "legalist","conservative."

Regardless, I treat the memory of last year with great reverence and the music is intended to carry that through.
I will have more to say during the week about the killing of Terri.

There is a cd which was a compliation in honor of Lady Diana - I can look up the reference - has some similar themes.
