I really got to get around to reading this book.
Of course the Church was instrumental! Any reputable historian will tell you that Western civilization is the result of the long and complex interaction of Judaeo-Christian, Graeco-Roman cultural, legal, and political concepts. (Some would even add to the equation Germanic tribalism). As Edward Gibbon first observed, Christianity and barbarism were instrumental in Rome's fall -- but religion lessened the severity of the fall, and then began to construct a "new" civilization as the new and semi-barbaric religion became both civilizer - and civilized -.
I read it while deployed.
I even bought the audio book for the family to listen to.
And am now reading Woods best-seller "Politically Correct Guide to American History" (also have the audio book of this one).
Making sure my home-educated children have all the facts at their disposal. My parents were professional public school educators and are tickled to death that my six kids are learning at home.
