Tropical Storm Rita is heading WNW at 10 mph with winds of 50 mph.
Even if this storm does not intensify, the best news we could have is for the storm to follow the track of Ophelia and maybe go further East of that track.
It would be very bad for any Tropical Storm to enter the Gulf. It would force evacuations of the Oil rigs in the Gulf, and drive up prices (again), especially Natural Gas.
This will cause suffering for many people across the United States.
The other problem is that if it heads towards New Orleans and/or the Mississippi/Alabama Gulf Coast, it will wreak havoc with operations ongoing to restore power, drain flooded areas, and all the work to get things back to normal after Katrina.
In the Catholic Church, Saint Rita is known as the Saint of the Impossible, so perhaps it is appropriate to think of her and ask her not to cause any more suffering with a storm named after her.
I do not wish or pray that the storm hits Florida or any land mass -- but the areas devastated by Katrina are very vulernable to further damage and problems.
If this storm follows in the wake of Ophelia, then the storm will not have as much energy available -- hurricanes/tropical storms suck the energy out of water in terms of heat, and they need the "hot water" for them to intensity. That is why following Ophelia would be good news -- less chance for it hopefully to intensify into a strong storm.
Right now Tropical Storm Rita is on a track similar to Hurricane Katrina -- but hopefully with cold fronts pushing out of Canada this time of year will affect the path of the storm away from land.
At this point, let us hope and pray for God's mercy.
Natural Gas prices are about 4 times what they were about 4 years ago... That will have a major impact on people's utility bills -- and probably drive oil/heating oil/gasoline much higher as well.
Oil Companies have to evacuate offshore oil facilities as soon as there is ample time to safely evacuate all people from these platforms. Thus, if Tropical Storm Rita crosses the Florida keys into the Gulf, it is almost an automatic shutdown of about a week of production.
That does not take into account any damage that might occur.
If God is trying to scare the hell out of me, He is now doing a pretty good job!

So if God is hell bent on sending it into the gulf do you realy think a prayer will help? Nature is nature, it does what it wants. Pray for the best but prepare for the worst. It is up to You to plan and prepare.

Rebuke the storm. Jesus gave you the power and more and more people are finding that works.
I also strongly believe that the Will of God is influenced by our prayers.
The story of the Devotion to the Divine Mercy is an interesting one (Roman Catholic devotion). Pope John II was able to clear up problems in the church with this devotion just six months before he was made Pope. He cleared up the problems when he was still Archbishop of Krakow.
In the Roman Catholic Church, there is a famous story of St. Faustina (Divine Mercy Diary) where God was sending an angel of chastisement to cause a powerful earthquake. Saint Faustina was shown that the angel of chastisement became totally helpless when someone prayed the Chaplet of Divine Mercy.
The story of how the materials for this devotion came out of Poland after Poland fell to Nazi Germany, and the Soviet Union occupied part of Eastern Poland, is incredible.
A priest fleeing Poland through the Soviet Union into Japan was able to get these religious materials out of the Soviet Union -- which banned all religious materials at the time.
The priest arrived in Japan just before the attack on Pearl Harbor and was able to leave Japan just before the attack for the United States.
The priest was met as soon he got to Japan by someone who was ordered to give him money for passage to the United States (money from his order in the United States).
This order of priests is known as the Marians of the Immaculate Conception.

Naggin'Nagin is NUTS to be saying that all these people can come back into New Orleans with this storm on the horizon.

No. I grew up along the Gulf Coast many years ago. Let us just say I "sense" something about this storm.
Suppose you are a New Orleans hurricane evacuee now in Houston. How would you feel if a Cat 5 storm is approaching you on Friday.
That is a very possible scenario right now... Galveston or Corpus Christi or maybe as far East as Houma, La, may see a Cat 5 storm later this week.
I certainly hope that this does not happen...
The more distance these storms travel through the Gulf of Mexico, i.e., Florida Keys to Texas Coast, the more time it has to build into a powerful storm. Hurricane Katrina took a much shorter path, and look what it did!
Also, the US Energy markets will really be battered by this storm. They will have to shut all production in the Gulf by probably Wednesday.
This storm may hit the refineries that were not touched by Katrina, and look what happened to gasoline prices. New York City gets 95,000,000 gallons of gasoline a day from Houston, and that pipeline may be shutdown and knocked out of action for a second time within the last 30 days...
It just is a very ugly situation right now...
Now that gasoline prices started to drop, prepare for another hike in gasoline prices. The Gulf of Mexico is about to be shut in for a second time.
A number of refineries that are taking the brunt of the production load are now in the path of Hurricane Rita.
