Jesus didn't tell the woman at the well to go forth, be nice, and buy only fair trade coffee.

This ties into not making the people who are writing the check mad. Telling a mother who spent big bucks for a test tube baby she committed a sin is hard when she funds your brand new computer wing for the school. Telling a man who is a big shot lawyer he can't have an annulment to marry his 22 y/o former receptionist is rough when he is on the "parish council". It is going to get ugly soon, maybe...

BTW, don't forget to buy dolphin friendly tuna. The only problem is my sandwiches don't taste the same without the dolphin in them....

The problem isn't the Flipper-free tuna. There's much to be said for a eucharistic regard to the natural order as a precious gift for which we should be grateful and exercise good stewardship. The problem arises when stewardship's ripped from the eucharistic context, becoming no longer about gratitude that refers us to a Giver, but about asset management and self-referential sentimentality.
