In the modern world people spread all over the place. Even though this is still the heartland, there are Ukrainian Greek Catholics not only throughout Eastern Ukraine but also across Russia, Kazakhstan, you name it. These people have a right to be served.

Bracing stuff. Of course the notion that Western people terminally infected with moderninsm should be choosing their bishops is a non-starter and a recipe for endless trouble. The problem with allowing even advisory input is that the modern world's been brainwashed to think democracy is an absolute good in itself -- an end, rather than a means. Once you embrace this (and it's the founding myth of our country and culture) no end of mischief is bound to result.

Rome's refusal to recognize a UGCC Patriarchate in order to placate the Russian Orthodox Church is one of the real scandals of recent times, in my view. Of course I understand the big picture ecumenical reasons for this action, but the fact that Rome let a hierarch not in communion with it to dictate how it would act towards its own faithful (and they are faithful who have suffered a lot for their adherence to Rome--more than any of us in the West, for sure) seems to me to be a real sin against charity. You do remember the concept of the order of charity, right? How was it followed in this very regrettable matter? Who matters more to Rome, as shown by deeds, not just words?
