I thought it was the best line in the whole article.

You are so right.

I wonder if any of his victims were church members with him at previous churches. Some were neighbors.

This discussion isn't about the ELCA. That was just a side bit of info.

The discussion is about the news itself. Also about how "any church" can explain this within their church. I think you'll see that if you read back through the posts.

if any...victims...church members with him

I've wondered that, too....frightening thought. I sure hope not.

I know, though, that some join churches for the wrong reason. Builders, insurance salesmen, professions, etc.....sometimes go to a large dynamic church purely for contacts and inside tracks.

I suppose a serial killer might do the same thing.

I wish you were right but this isn't the way I've interpreted it. This is a tragedy for everyone and I feel very sorry for those members of this church who must be devastated. Like I said, I have no love for the ELCA but this could happen in any church.

CGG,
There are 66 posts on this thread and only 13 of them mention elca....and 4 of those are this conversation between the 2 of us.

And most of the others were simply trying to determine which church it was and if they were connected to the ECUSA.

So, I don't share your concerns.

LIGHTMAN's #19 post...

... Central States Synod (and Christ Lutheran) are part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). In 2001 the ELCA approved an agreement "Called to Common Mission" with the Episocpal Church USA which will lead to the full interchange of clergy. The technical name of for this agreement is "full communion".

This mess includes 30 years of 'communion'......too?

?.......Un-Human-Philosophies rather than Godly Bible DOCTRINES?

It's ALL about 'accepted',......'Worldviews'!

Sad,....but,...TRUE!

He was also a code enforcement officer or something, known to cite people for forgetting to cut their lawns.

How about

"The very foundation of our faith is shaken..."

Why, for heaven's sake? What do the actions of ONE man have to do with your faith in God, in scripture, in your denomination? There are jerks, weasels, scumbags and perverts in EVERY denomination, in EVERY faith. It doesn't mean you no longer should believe.

That's a fairweather faith. _______________________________________________

That line got me, too.

God has been quite clear about the existence of evil. They found out it existed among them, so their faith in God was shaken?

How bizarre and nonsensical is that?

Your phrase 'fairweather faith', in posting #8, was so appropriate...because that is all you have if it takes just one member of your particular church or religion, to shake ones religious foundation...

Good point...and if Judas could look like everybody else, and blend in, then so can every other type of disgusting human...

Did Judas repent?

I dont believe he did...but what does that have to do with the subject at hand? We were discussing how truly repugnant, disgusting people can blend in with good people and another poster pointed out that even Judas blended in with other people...

What was in the heart of Judas, and what is in the heart of others, is not known to me, or to you, or to anyone else...only God knows that...

But the point is, killers, rapists, robbers, whatever type of criminal behavior you can think of, is most likely represented in many different churches and religions, without the other members ever being aware of it...

Did Judas repent?

According to Matthew 27:3-10, Judas did repent:

"When Judas, his betrayer, saw that he was condemned, he repented and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, saying, "I have sinned in betraying innocent blood.

Thanks for the data. I would be surprised if this count does not go up higher. DNA is a wonderful tool and I have a hard time believing this guy could hold himself at bay since 91. Just my opinion.

Yes, but THEN Judas hung himself. So, what is the point of his repentence?

Slight understatement.
