Happy Ref. Sunday ..
Today is also Halloween. I wonder if it was Halloween on that day, too...
What I mean to ask is did M.L. pick Oct 31 by chance or on purpose?

October 17th, 1517 marks the outward beginning of the Reformation. All Saints Day, a pre-exsiting Catholic holiday on ar about Oct. 31st, coincided nicely.

All Saint's Day is November 1. Many pilgrims were in Wittenberg for that festival. The church door was the community bulletin board, and a good place to post notices for future debate. From my reading, the year before he had preached a critical sermon on All Saint's Day, and I suppose people were interested in what might be forthcoming. So I would say he took advantage of the holiday.
