Like all good Catholics, they knew that any sin—no matter how slight—is offensive to the Crucified. Kneeling at the feet of Our Lord’s representative, then, they manifested such prayerful contrition that it brought tears to the eyes of those who looked on.
I am pleased to see people somewhere still believe this way. My recent dose of "New Church" thought on the subject was quite disturbing.
