We needed these taxes to help the lonely poor.

It worked. They're not lonely anymore.

All that tea our ancestors dumped in Boston harbor lost its impact a long time ago.

FYI, we weren't the most prosperous nation on earth 100 years ago. Our status amongst nations took two giant leaps that led us to #1. The first being in the 1920's follwing the first world war, and of course we emerged from the 2nd world war as a true superpower.

Good morning, Mr. Jefferson. The great experiment that you, Mr. Adams and Mr. Franklin concieved in Philadelphia has run amok. Those who have assumed your mantel presume to speak in your stead when they tax the daylights out of those of us whom you wanted to help.

Depends on what the meaning of "prosperous" is. It could mean land of greatest opportunity and potential which America surely was at that time.

On December 16, Two hundred and thirty years ago, men knew that arbitrary taxes were the chains of oppression. Today it feels like we're subjected to what amounts to a "Stamp Act" every day.

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most money from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy followed by a dictatorship.

The average age of the world's great civilizations has been two hundred years. These nations have progressed through the following sequence: from bondage to spiritual faith, from spiritual faith to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependency, from dependency back to bondage.

What the hell happened to this country?!

We allowed envy to trump our fear of centralized government.

"We allowed envy to trump our fear of centralized government."

Short, to the point, and absolutely true. Human nature is something that will never change, it seems.
