CLEVELAND 33, PITTSBURGH 13

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Tim Couch did what Kelly Holcomb couldn't do nine months ago -- preserve a big Cleveland Browns' fourth-quarter lead in Pittsburgh.

Couch threw for two touchdowns and ran for another before halftime in his second start since last season, and the Browns took advantage of three Tommy Maddox turnovers to end a six-game losing streak to their biggest rivals, beating the Steelers 33-13 Sunday night.

In essentially a must-win game, the Browns (2-3) shook off the absence of the injured Holcomb and two tough losses in Pittsburgh a year ago to beat the Steelers (2-3) for only the third time in 16 games.

Browns coach Butch Davis finally beat the Steelers for the first time in six tries as Cleveland won in Pittsburgh for only the sixth time in 33 tries since 1970.

Maddox led both Steelers comeback wins against the Browns last season, including a 36-33 playoff win in which Pittsburgh trailed 24-7 late in the third quarter. But his own mistakes prevented him from mounting a rally this time, and so did the Browns' excellent coverage against Hines Ward and Plaxico Burress. The AFC's top receiving duo had only three catches between them until late in the game, and Maddox was lifted after going 11-of-24 for 136 yards.

Maddox's fumble on the Steelers' third play from scrimmage led to Phil Dawson's 19-yard field goal and a 10-0 Browns lead. Early in the third quarter, Daylon McCutcheon stepped in front of a Maddox pass intended for Jerame Tuman and returned it 75 yards for a touchdown and a 30-10 Browns' lead. Of Maddox's eight interceptions this season, three have been returned for touchdowns and a fourth was returned to the 1, leading to another touchdown.

Cleveland's offense was the NFL's third worst statistically going into the game and Pittsburgh's defense was the second best, but it looked the other way around as Couch won his sixth consecutive road start.

Couch, who was 20-of-25 for 208 yards, completed three passes of 18 yards or longer on the Browns' opening 81-yard drive, including Quincy Morgan for 32 yards, before finding Andre Davis wide open over the middle for a 6-yard touchdown.

Maddox, whose two interceptions led to Titans touchdowns the week before in a 30-13 loss, then was stripped of the ball by Courtney Brown on Pittsburgh's third play, leading to Phil Dawson's 19-yard field goal and the 10-0 lead. The Browns settled for the field goal after having a second-and-goal at the 2.

Davis' 61-yard kickoff return set up Couch's second touchdown pass of the half, a 9-yarder in the rear of the end zone to Kevin Johnson with linebacker Kendrell Bell in coverage. Nose tackle Casey Hampton blocked Dawson's extra point attempt.

Ward catches of 30 and 25 yards led to Jerome Bettis' 1-yard run, Pittsburgh's only touchdown of the first half, but the Browns answered with a 78-yard drive just before halftime. With the Browns down to one play before they would have tried a field goal, Couch scrambled to his right, found an open lane and scored from the 9 with just six seconds left before halftime. Couch's touchdown run was only the second of his career and his first since his rookie season in 1999.

Maddox has thrown 19 interceptions in his last 13 starts.

The Squeelers are having a tough year. They're certainly mailing it in this season.

Hopefully the Modell curse will leave the Browns faster than the nearly 40 years that it took for the Bragan / Colavito curse to leave the Tribe.

The Brown's have never been to a Super Bowl. They were the AFL Champions in 1964 and have been to the NFL playoffs many, many disappointing times but, sadly, not a single Super Bowl appearance.

I was waiting for someone else to start the modell due to a busy day (of making fun of people wearing black and Yellow.) Please note that the Saints wear "Black and Gold". The Squealers wear "Yellow". . Plus, a little "Budweiser Flu" was involved. :o. Plus, my team said all that needed to be said. But why not? hehehehe

Now that that is out of the way, let's commence with the commentary.

- Did you all see the Squealer fan stick the peanut up his nose? Wow. We have a pretty advanced medical community in Cleveland, but we don't have do-it-yourself brain transplants.

- There may have been a legitimate excuse for all those empty yellow seats. The Squealer fans in them may have had to get up early today for a casting call for "Deliverance II: Attack Of The Chinless". At least they look out for the team's budget. Note how they all bring their own toilet paper to the stadium. It would be better if they didn't wave it around during the game, though.

- It would truly be a foul task to have to clean off/out Cowher's chin mike after that game.

- Tommy Maddox looked so much like Kordelia the team is going to stake out Schenley Park to make sure he doesn't start hanging out there.

-When I played ball, it was tradition to greet the other team in the middle of the field after the game. My neices's flag football team did it after their first game Saturday. Back in "my day", to not do so was considered a severe dis on the other team. I'm sure we all saw Hines Ward going back to the locker room during the last minute of the game. Has this tradition gone away, or was he just being what he's famous for being...a classless punk b****?

Give Maddox credit for hitting the wide open reciever (Daylon McCutcheon)....throwing it where only he could catch it and setting him up to take it in for six.

Hell, the "modell curse" (also named "David") will be leaving the Baltimore Ratbirds at the end of the season, it was just announced.

Steelers sucked in that game. Hell, the Steelers had to get out the step ladder and clumb up to rungs just to get to Suck.

Congrats to the Brownies and Tim Couch for a great game.

Your out of bounds with this comment. I have got laid there many times, played golf and played soccer.

I am sure there are shady parts of Schenley Park. My point is, WHO CARES. It is a great area depending upon what you are looking for.

What makes you mad is that your team got spanked like bad children with good parents on national TV in a game you expected to win. I'd be mad too....
