TOM MCCLINTOCK DAILY EDITION - 10/5/03 (CA GOVERNOR'S RACE)

Posted on 10/05/2003 6:48:47 AM PDT by Rabid Dog

Please post local, regional, national news and views on Tom McClintock. This is a news and info thread. The following guidelines for posting are per DoughtyOne's most excellent suggestion.

McClintock Camp - Supporters or Defenders

Please post positive articles about Tom's policies and leave the Schwarzenegger bashing to the Democrats.

Schwarzenegger Camp - Supporters or Defenders

The call for McClintock to withdraw right now, or the tactic of calling him and his followers names for not doing so, is not productive and isn't good for the party.

Please save the Rino Arnold/Unelectable Tom rants for other threads.

"Dear Mr. Reagan, it should be obvious to you now that you can never be elected governor. Please put aside your ego, for the good of our party, and get behind the one man who is moderate enough to appeal to California voters - - San Francisco Mayor George Christopher."

Kind of a schizophrenic article. Second paragraph contradicts the first one. I included the paragraph on Tom because his comments were widely taken out of context yesterday on the forum.

Schwarzenegger rebuked in debate
By Herbert A. Sample -- Bee San Francisco Bureau

SAN DIEGO -- Three of the candidates vying to replace Gov. Gray Davis fired stinging rebukes at Arnold Schwarzenegger during a debate here Saturday evening, calling for an investigation of allegations in recent days that the leading Republican contender groped women over the last 20 years.

Democrat Cruz Bustamante, Republican Tom McClintock and Green Party candidate Peter Camejo, appearing together for the last time before Tuesday's gubernatorial recall election, hardly mentioned Schwarzenegger during a 90-minute debate whose topics ranged from health care to public financing of campaigns, education and driver's licenses for undocumented immigrants.

McClintock, a veteran state senator from Simi Valley, voiced caution about the late-campaign nature of the allegations, which were first reported Thursday in the Los Angeles Times. But if the charges are true, he added, the conduct was "absolutely reprehensible. It is disgraceful and it is completely unfit for someone seeking public office."

Daniel's take on the Los Angeles Times reporting as of late. Interesting read.

On the bulletin board in my office I keep a large white political button with black writing that reads: “I don’t believe the Los Angeles Times.” I bought it several years ago when I worked for that paper and saw the pin at a Republican Party convention. That sentiment, long descriptive of the Republican view of the media, has now become the mantra of the Arnold Schwarzenegger for Governor campaign.

One last effort to target voters
By Aurelio Rojas -- Bee Staff Writer
http://www.sacbee.com/content/politics/recall/story/7543491p-8485056c.html

EL MONTE -- Reinforced by millions of political mailers and telephone calls, ground troops headed into the home stretch of California's historic gubernatorial recall campaign Saturday, knocking on doors across the state and targeting irregular and undecided voters.
The California Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, held get-out-the-vote rallies here and in more than a dozen other cities, exhorting union members to protect wage and benefit gains made under the Democratic administration of Gov. Gray Davis.

"We have before us an ability to determine how working men and women will be treated in this state," Sen. Gil Cedillo, an East Los Angeles Democrat and former union leader, told about 100 precinct walkers who gathered at a firefighters' union hall east of downtown Los Angeles.

Republican Party officials, meanwhile, reported a surge in volunteers energized by the prospect of ousting Davis. They planned to put up 75,000 lawn signs and twice as many door-hangers before Tuesday's election, urging voters to elect GOP front-runner Arnold Schwarzenegger.

By the way, one of the latest CA G.O.P. "talking points" is trying to take credit for making the recall happen. It has appeared on a number of posts on this board - or maybe the claim is just being made by people who want to work for the LA Times.

Building exposure by splitting the Republican vote, including a large number of conservatives, is a gambit that may backfire.

The ablity to lead a broad spectrum and the judgement of knowing when to withdraw are important political skills. Tom has excellent ideology but his other skills need work.

The polls show Arnold will win even if McClintock is in the race.
So who is he hurting by staying in the race no one and he is getting ready for the fallout that will be a Arnold govenorship.
The dems are already saying that they will obstruct Arnold and his policies thus leaving two choices for California in the next election back to the dems or to a true conservative.
More than likely most conservatives would vote for the recall and then not vote for a replacement if McClintock wasn't on the ballot. A true conservative will not vote for someone who has a liberal veiw on abortion and gay marriage.
So the idea that McClintock is splitting the vote is ludicrous.

In all of the reporting about this whole race I wonder who stands to become lieutenant Governor. Anybody know?

I don't know how that works. Does Cruz remain as Lt. Governor? Does the new Governor get to chose? I'm sure someone knows. Let me know if you find out.

Cruz was elected independently.
If he loses the Gov race, he keeps his Lt. job.
If he wins, he gets to appoint a new Lt.

I have always wondered - What is a "true conservative"? Who decides?

How does one become a "true conservative"?

Is Tom McClintock a RINOs because he won't withdraw for the good of his party?

Are all McClintock supporters conservatives or are they RINOs?

Are all Arnold supporters RINOs and "untrue conservatives" or can they be?

How does one become a RINO?

Would a "true conservative" appear for an interview on CNN or MSNBC?

Just curious.

The recall isn't about "what's good for the party" - it's about what's good for California. The CA G.O.P. needs to get their priorities straight.

You may have that backwords. The parties are more powerful than any scattered groups of Liberals, Conservatives, Libertarians, or individuals. The parties set the agendas for elections/reelections, focus campaigns, select the nominees that you will vote for, help those you vote into office to pass their agenda..... If we think it's good for California, then it's good for the party and the party machinery can help make it happen. Without the party, you're just another write-in candidate.
