May I get some help here?: Why is Arnold against referendum to repeal illegals' drivers licenses?

Arnold is trying to "skate around" this issue. Why can't he take a straightforward stand?
Here is how reporter Thomas Elias puts it:
Replacement candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger tried to skate around the issue ... . He's against licenses for illegals, he said while accusing Davis of pandering to Latino voters. But he won't support a referendum. Does he really want that non-position publicized before his staff gets a chance to rethink it?
Schwarzenegger is plainly trying to placate conservative Republican voters whose votes he needs and may be losing to Republican state Sen. Tom McClintock, while also trying to satisfy Latino voters who favor licensing all immigrants who can pass written and road tests. Time will tell whether his doubletalk will fly.

Because he wants his nanny to be able to drive.

A few of us have been trying to get a coherent answer to this question for a week or so. The only "answer" appears to be that Arnold will somehow find a way to overturn SB60 but nobody seems to have any idea how.

Why should McClintock drop out when Arnold doesn't even have the courage to support the referendum to repeal drivers licenses for illegals?
To: churchillbuff
Schwarzenegger is really a democrat. If he wins, the Kennedy's will be running California. Sheeeeeesh! And we have a great conservative candidate like Tom McClintock. Go figure.

He's not against it; he's following protocol.
It is very bad form for Politician A to endorse a campaign launched Politician B when Politician A and B are competing for the same office, unless Politician B actually invites Politician A to do so. McClintock has not invited Schwarzenegger to do so.

The only ways to undue it other than by referendum are 1) legislation 2) ballot initiative 1)If by some chance the leftists who control the legislature were to do a 180 and vote repeal the law they just passed, it would be a FULL YEAR before it would be undone. (quick quiz, how many licenses can the DMV issue in a year, I bet its a lot)
2) If he were to take it to an initiative it would easily be TWO years of that law.
Draw your own conclusions.

I don't get it. The biggest issue in California is the new law to give drivers licenses to illegals. There's a referendum that would repeal it. BUT ARNOLD ISN'T SUPPORTING THAT REFERENDUM, WHILE TOM IS. And I'm supposed to vote for Arnold? Since he's going AWOL on this no-brainer issue, how can I believe he would EVER make a stand on ANYTHING? Please, one of your Arnold groupies, TELL ME WHY HE WON'T SUPPORT THIS REFERENDUM - - is he a phoney, or merely chicken?

He's not supporting it. That's all that counts. The rest of your post is inside baseball rationale for political insiders --- but Arnold's supposed to be an outsider. If he won't take a stand on this no-brainer issue, how can we believe he has the courage and independence to take a stand on ANYTHING? Sorry, guess I'm not as easily fooled as some - - I've got to go with somebody who tells us what he believes and acts consistently with those beliefs. And that's not Arnold.

You've been told why in Post #8. Read and stop whining.

Schwarzeneggar is against drivers license for illegal immigrants on the ground for security against terrorism. He has stated that as governor he will have the law retracted and if the legislature refuses he will bypass them by referendum. He is against Prop 54 which wants to do away with collecting racial data by the government. He argues that for research and monitoring purposes, racial data is still needed by government or institutions to formulate public policies, in the areas of health, education, etc, etc.

Friend, a referendum has to be within a certain number of days after the law's enactment - - that's why they have to do it NOW. But ARnold isn't supporting the referendum. What gives? Looks to me like he's a phoney --- but you can believe his handlers rather than your own two eyes if you want.

He's against licenses for illegals, he said while accusing Davis of pandering to Latino voters. But he won't support a referendum. He's weaving a tangled web.

First, McClintock (though he supports it) didn't launch the referendum, so Post 8 is wrong and irrelevant.
Second, even if that were so, why isn't ARnold big to sign on anyway?
"Get over it"??:? Buddy, this is the most important issue in California -- the invasion by illegals. Arnold is AWOL, and I'm supposed to "get over it" You really are a true believe in this guy. Has he got you hypnotized?
To: churchillbuff
This is from Bill O'Reily's interview with Arnold regarding driver's license for illegals.
SCHWARZENEGGER: I definitely would rescind the driver's license, because I think it is unfair to the rest of the people of California. They have now driver's licensing required of people from all over the world that can come and get driver's licenses without any background check. I think it is ridiculous. It's unsafe for the state. It creates big security problems here. The law enforcement community is against that. The federal government is against that. The attorney general of California, Bill Lockyer, is against that, and I am definitely against it. I think, like I said, it will create serious security problems.

I think it's because he has learned one of the vital lessons of public life, fence sitting. He recognizes that Davis signed a bad law, but also that all those who would vote for Davis for that reason may also vote Arnold. And right now, he wants the votes. maybe he figures someone will go to the Supremes (of the US) and the law will be struck down.
