DURHAM, N.C. -- For years, low-carbohydrate diets, like the popular Atkins diet, have often been labeled as outrageous and even dangerous. In the past few years, medical research has shown there are benefits.
Now, some health experts believe the low-carb diet may be worth a try -- including a nationally known weight loss center in Durham.

Unless they have invented low carb grits and cornbread, it's not gonna work.

Speaking from experience, 1,200 calories a day is not doable for most people and not sustainable for many others. Who the hell wants to spend the rest of their lives (or even a small part of it) eating only 1,200 calories a day?
I have been losing weight all year on a similar "low-carb" plan (not Atkins), only I call it "normal-carb" because I eat carbs, just the good carbs, like those found in yogurt, berries, vegetables, and other natural foods, even beer. I stay under about 100g a day (of carb) but I eat between 2,000 and 2,500 calories a day. Average is about 2,200. Still, I've been losing 3 pounds a week since April doing this and have never been hungry.

I think that the Duke Diet and Fitness Center serves a lot of Yankees.

Nothing is better than a nice big mug of Breyers choclate icecream with a slim fast poured over it...(for the vitimins)
Like a bank account...calories mount up in the form of deposits...
Excercise equals withdrawels eating equals deposits
If one withdraws more than one takes in you loose wt.
The opposite happens you gain wt.
The other factor is metabolism...age physical condition and genetics are variables one must determine about oneself
Humans are omnivores whose genetic background may dispose them to eat more of one kind of food vs someone whose genetic background does not
Japanese ..seafood Germans meat and potatos etc etc
Balance imo is the key to nutrition
There are not shortcuts ..other than starvation...all have reprocussions and consequences
The key imo is activity during the day...and keeping your body temperature up...stay warm lose wt.
If you have a sedintary job...get up and walk stairs or just get up and get the blood moving every half hour if possible..
My wife gets up from her keyboard hourly to walk up and down the office stairwell and takes a quick half hour walk at noon..(for example)

This still sounds like a yuppie diet to me. Politically correct and painful.
