Pittsburgh -- city of French fries, pierogies and other fatty foods.

Some people find this hard to swallow.

"You just do not see a lot of healthy restaurants," said Eddy Confer, 52, of Latrobe. "In general, there's not much for health food and exercise here." Confer, who works Downtown, said she'd like to see fewer pierogies, kielbasa and French fries and more fruits, veggies and tofu.

If you want "health food" in the 'burgh, go to Vincent's and get a pizza and pitcher of "Arn."

About 60 percent of adults in Pennsylvania are overweight

These are round figures.

I think they call it supply and demand ? You want health food? Go open a health food restaurant 'dahntahn' and see how long it lasts.

My son moved to Pittsburgh 2 1/2 years ago and has put on quite a bit of weight. When he left here in June 2001, he weighed about 195 lbs. I'll bet he's up to 250 lbs now.

Good Lord...... people will whine about anything won't they? There is almost always something you can eat that isn't too fattening..... and if not, bring your lunch...... geez..... lol

Fernstrom suggests ordering a grilled chicken sandwich or chili with baked potato

Not a good choice according to South Beach and Atkins. A yam or sweet potato is a much more healthy carb.

I agree. This gal found a good 'whine' to go with that tofu.

I particularly like the quote about animal fats not being heart healthy - at the same time Atkins people are no doubt losing weight and getting healthier by going to that low carb buffet mentioned elsewhere in the article.

she doesn't plan on being in business long huh??

The reason for so many over weight folks is not because of what they eat .. but how much they eat .. and then going and sitting on their butts the rest of the day.

We use to have a lot of factory work that kept people up and going. Now we have many office jobs

We use to have kids out playing and running around with their friends. Now they sit in front of TV all day.

Bottom line ... we need to get off or butts and exercise more

A yam or sweet potato...

Ack! One of two veggies I can think of that I can't stomach.

Okay, three. Red Beets. My father would occasionally make borscht, mostly for my mother. (thank God)

French fries on top of salads?? That's a new one to me.

It's likely an indirect reference to the famous Primanti Brothers Sandwich, which is basicly any kind of meat/cheese/fried-egg, etc. etc. that you want ALONG WITH Cole Slaw, Fries and Tomatoe between two slices of Italian bread.
(Yes, the fries and cole slaw are INSIDE the sandwich.)

When I was growing up I was outside after school, skating, biking, climbing trees, running around. I didn't come home until dinner was ready. On the weekends we were outside all the time with friends, playing. My parents knew we were somewhere out there in the neighborhood, but no worries.

Now however, you can't let you kids run around like that. You have to know where they are all the time, and make sure they are being supervised. It cuts down on their feeling of independence, their creativity, their people skills. Being chubby is only one of the drawbacks to the way children are being brought up.
