Tom McClintock: Ronald Reagan and this Recall Election ["I am in this race to the end!"]

A Message from Senator Tom McClintock

Dear Fellow Californian,

When Ronald Reagan first ran for Governor of California, the primary was between Reagan, the conservative, and George Christopher, a well-to-do businessman who was branded the moderate.

Back then, as today, the story line was that a conservative could win a Primary Election in California but never the General Election.

And back then, Reagan was sent an open letter by three Republican legislators who asked him to rise above personal ambition, drop out of the race and get behind Christopher for the good of the Party.

Reagan declined. The rest is history. Ronald Reagan proved then as we can prove today, that a conservative Republican can win a statewide California Election.

Did Reagan stay in because of blind personal ambition? I think not!

I believe Ronald Reagan felt it would be wrong to walk away from his principles and from those who believed as he did in those same principles.

And that is exactly the same reason why I am in this race to the end!

[Solicitation Removed]

This election is far from over! Just today the Sacramento Municipal Court ruled that Cruz Bustamante illegally transferred $4 million dollars in contributions and ordered those contributions returned.

This is a disastrous, perhaps even fatal hit to his campaign since he must now replace the money he has spent with any funds left in his Gubernatorial account as well as stop all of his commercials on proposition 54, a major component of his campaign.

This has only heightened the Democrats' desperation to get me out of the race so they can focus their venomous attack ads on Arnold Schwarzenegger. They know, as do you, that I am the only Republican candidate immune to those attacks.

Add to that—I am gaining ground every day in the polls!

Folks, we can do this, and every day that passes proves that case more and more.

[Solicitation Removed]

I have said it before...I am counting on you every bit as much as you are counting on me. If elected, I won’t let you down. And that's a promise.

Most Sincerely,

Tom McClintock
California State Senator

Comparing 1970s California, if not prior, to 2003 California, is a pretty far reach. Tom is acually to the right of the Ronald Reagan that ran for office here then too.

I really loved that e-card. Clever! I'd love to see a commercial where Gray Davis face morphs into Bill Clinton's and where it says: "This man wants to tax you out of your car. Send him packing out of the Governor's Office. Say a la hasta vista Davis Oct. 7th!"

Sorry I dont recall Ronald Regan ever taking money from foreign nations to get elected.

Bill Clinton did.

Oh yeah and so did McClintock.

Arnold isn't worth electing. Arnold, Cruz and Gray -- three peas plunked from the same political pod.

There's one Republican in the race -- and just like your loser friends in 1966, who said Reagan couldn't be elected, you are wrong, too.

Is that the best you can do? And how does it feel to be a FOB or is it FOA now?

The liberals haven't changed much.

"Dear Mr. Reagan, it should be obvious to you now that you can never be elected governor. Please put aside your ego, for the good of our party, and get behind the one man who is moderate enough to appeal to California voters - - San Francisco Mayor George Christopher." --Look Magazine 1966

Thank God for FR or we would never hear these things from the so called media!

Good grief. Tom thinks his campaigning ability is on par with Reagan? I was laughing at Dean who thinks he's Clinton but this McCintock is really the ultimate jester. I'm sure he's about to join forces with Pat Buchanon soon.

Its not a primary. A recall election is an abbreviated general election except the incumbent is NOT allowed to succeed himself if the voters give him the boot.

With Arnold now introducing the Robert Kennedy Jr. enviro plan, things may finally be falling into place for a classic three way finish. Let Arnold and Bustamante fight over who is more left-wing, and Tom can come in on the final stretch to victory as all the star struck conservatives finally come to their senses and Help Tom Help California return to her glory days.

What's Ubermensch Schwarzenegger with his 100 percent name recognition and tens of millions of dollars pulling down? 26 percent?

*Snore*

By the time McClintock realizes this is not a primary, it'll be too late.

I recall the 1970's in California, the beginnings of the current liberalism but a long way from the total imbalance that seems to exist now.

Ronald Reagan always seemed to be more of a moderate than a conservative. One thing he certainly was that many are not was a great communicator, and a charismatic, charming one as well. Always willing to negotiate, to compromise, to achieve success if he needed to. Without that he would not have had his great achievements and the world would be far different now.

Says how much you know about Tom. He's far more likely to join forces with Ron Paul than with Pat Buchanan.
