If the ground is already saturated, you guys are going to lose lots of big trees. They are going to blow right over with the first gust. I'm sorry about that, Virginia has some beautiful old trees.

Uh oh. My tank's pretty close to empty, and I'm here in Chesapeake/VA Beach too....
If you're looking for batteries, etc., you can always go to non-department stores (Babys-R-Us had a big rack of them today, for example)....

PS: having been through several hurricanes in south Florida in the 100-120 mph range (but missing Hurricane Andrew in 1992), I think that overall the greatest ultimate damage in a hurricane comes from the force of water + gravity, especially in hilly regions. We never had major damage on the flat ground in FL in the 1960's, but the flooding from rains in the 1985 hurricane killed many people here in WV.

You are cordially invited to a cedar shake shingle replacement party sometime withing the next few days.
See jla for details and directions.
Buy a house with a wood roof & now they're soon to be blown off. Damn it anyways! LOL

I'm worrying about the fact that my house is surrounded by trees. Visions of trees crashing through the roof are crowding my head....

I'm worrying about the fact that my house is surrounded by trees...When the wind picks up, sleep downstairs if you're in a two-story.
If your house is a one-story you might want to think about phoning a relative whose lot is tree-free, or phoning reservations in at the Sheraton up on Midlothian Trnpk.
I've trees all around here, including three pines in the front yd. that tower over the house.

We have a first floor master bedroom so that's not a problem.
I think finding a hotel room in Richmond is getting very difficult from what I've heard on WRVA. Lots of hotels are already fully booked.
I don't think I would be so worried except that the ground is totally saturated.
I think this storm is going to be terrible - my hip is killing me already! LOL
