California is a crystal ball, and even the Termanator can't change basic math.
The big thing we have going for us is that this country is so big, we have a large margin of error. We can make stupid taxation and immigration decisions for a couple of decades and still recover. Sure, our immigration policies are foolish, but if we decide to stop immigration and adopt a heavily assimilationist policy towards immigrants that are already here, we can fix the problem in less than a decade.
A small country like Sweden can't make too many immigration or social mistakes or it will find itself quickly overrun.
