Amanpour: CNN practiced self-censorship (afraid of Bush and FOX)
USA Today ^ | 14 Sept 2003 | Peter Johnson

CNN's top war correspondent, Christiane Amanpour, says that the press muzzled itself during the Iraq war. And, she says CNN "was intimidated" by the Bush administration and Fox News, which "put a climate of fear and self-censorship."

As criticism of the war and its aftermath intensifies, Amanpour joins a chorus of journalists and pundits who charge that the media largely toed the Bush administration line in covering the war and, by doing so, failed to aggressively question the motives behind the invasion.

CNN living in a climate of fear? She and they *should* be afraid of the accusation they give aid and comfort to the enemy.

Said Amanpour: "I think the press was muzzled, and I think the press self-muzzled. I'm sorry to say, but certainly television and, perhaps, to a certain extent, my station was intimidated by the administration and its foot soldiers at Fox News.

Leftists just do not understand capitalist, free societies. The people want the TRUTH, which is why they view Fox News, everything comes from the people, from the ground up, instead of from up high, and neither CNN nor Bush can do anything about it. CNN HAS to respect what the market is telling them, and Amanpour cannot grasp this simple fact.

CNN will change, or the market will take it down.

This article is entirely BS for cover. CNN is just doing CYA for their declining US ratings.

CNN in europe has no problem WHATSOEVER bashing the US or bashing GWB personally and GWB administration.

(Fron CNNeurope there is a loud british guy who appears on occasion in the usa's CNN AM hours is venemously pro-tax and and anti-bush.)

I don't buy CNN being intimidated for one Nanosecond. The only thing intimidating CNN is the abysmal ratings and the HUGE lack of gravitas at CNN.

"It's not a question of couldn't do it, it's a question of tone," Amanpour said.

This is the biggest load of CRAP I have ever heard! I was honeymooning in Hawaii during the height of the war and the only news station available in the hotel room (much to my dismay) was CNN. I can honestly say that the "tone" she refers to disgusted me. CNN - and especially Amanpour, whose "reporting" I vividly remember yelling at the TV over - had an anitwar TONE the entire time. They were practically rooting for the Iraqis.

Hell yeah they do... I like how Fox is not scared to tell it like it is, CNN is a bunch of PC cowards. That is why everyone watches Fox, to get the truth, not some feel-good biased fantasy.

"I loved it when the Serbs expelled her from covering the war in their country."

Of course...she was all in favor of that war. She not only "toed the line," she led it. As she talked about the inhumane refugee crisis, she forgot to mention that NATO bombs had something to do with this displacement. I don't recall her concern for that administrations reasons for war...even though Racak and the mass-graves have yet to be explained. A War Whore is what she is...she get's paid for her services.

Someone should post a link to that letter by the CNN honcho admitting that CNN slanted its Iraq coverage before the war so that Hussein wouldn't kick it out of the country.

Wasn't it CNN that sat in Iraq and never reported on rape rooms, torture chambers, and humans being put in industrial shredders? Yep, they were too busy getting all the news the corrupt dictator wanted them to disseminate. Do they regret covering for Saddam and his killers to keep access? No. They regret not using this war as an excuse to bash Bush more than they already do. Creepy, brain-dead CNN.

I know this is kind of an older debate as well, did something new come out of it? Why was it brought back up. Don't get me wrong, I am not a CNN fan, just wondering why it was uncovered again. Also, is there anything they can get in actual "trouble" for? How is this type of thing handled?
