Masked Guerrillas Battle U.S. Soldiers in Iraq

KHALDIYA, Iraq (Reuters) - Masked guerrillas attacked U.S. soldiers repairing a broken-down truck on Thursday, prompting a firefight that left buildings burning in a town in Saddam Hussein's former heartland, witnesses said.

The U.S. military could not immediately give details of the incident, which took place in the so-called "Sunni Triangle," and it was unclear if anyone was hurt.

The attackers fired two rocket-propelled grenades at soldiers working on the truck in the afternoon, after which two U.S. tanks arrived and fired at nearby buildings in Khaldiya, about 45 miles west of Baghdad in a Sunni Muslim area where anti-U.S. resistance has been strongest.

There was also heavy machine-gun fire on both sides, the witnesses said.

"This is a warning to any army which wants to come and take over our country," one local man shouted as flames blazed from the vehicles and a building behind him. "Any troops coming here, we will attack them like we attack Americans."

U.S. troops occupying Iraq are attacked 15 times a day on average and have lost nearly 70 soldiers in combat since major hostilities were declared over on May 1 after the toppling of Saddam Hussein.

Saddam's heartland was in the Sunni Muslim areas to the north and west of Baghdad.

After the incident in Khaldiya, a crowd of Iraqis gathered chanting: "We sacrifice our blood and soul for you Saddam."

FIREFIGHT ERUPTS IN IRAQ

A major firefight has erupted in a flashpoint Iraqi town leaving several US troops wounded.

Masked gunmen fired machine guns, mortar rounds and rocket propelled grenades at a US military convoy which had stopped in a small town to the west of Baghdad after a vehicle broke down.

Witnesses say the battle started at around 4.30pm local time (1.30pm BST) when the convoy, consisting of two American transporters and two other vehicles, was hit by a volley of three rockets.

US reinforcements were drafted in immediately and fighting lasted for more than an hour.

There are reports of American soldiers severely wounded but US officials have not commented.

The attack happened in the town of Khaldiyah, around 30 miles west of the capital, in a region considered a Sunni muslim stronghold where US troops are regularly targeted by gunmen.

The incident came a day after US troops shot dead one Iraqi policeman and seriously wounded another when a bomb struck their convoy on the outskirts of Fallujah, according to a senior Iraqi police commander.

Baghdad, Iraq-AP -- The U-S military says it can't confirm reports of a big firefight involving American troops in Iraq.
Witnesses say some soldiers were killed in the shootout west of Fallujah (fuh-LOO'-juh). However, those kinds of accounts from the scene of Iraq attacks are often unreliable.

Associated Press Television News pictures showed three U-S vehicles on fire -- including a tank transport and a five-ton truck.

One witness says Iraqi fighters ambused the convoy with rocket-propelled grenades. He says he believed at least five U-S soldiers were killed and two wounded.

Fallujah is part of the "Sunni Triangle" that is a hotbed of support for Saddam Hussein and often dangerous for American troops.
