>"We've made significant improvements in cargo security, but we do have more, more to go," Luber said. TSA teams have examined cargo carriers and the airport facilities they use to load packages "to determine strengths and weaknesses in cargo security," she said.
>"The bottom line is just like passenger security there's not just one single silver bullet," Luber said. "We're taking a layered approach.
The kind of interia and bureaucracy expressed in these sentences will allow another 9-11 to happen. Govt security functions cannot be like any other agencies. There is no room for bureaucratic behaviors and do-nothingism when security is of concern.

I agree. I think he was just saving trying to save money.
But it does show they need to check packages better. Maybe at least have someone use a stethescope and check for a heartbeat! lol

Sounds like he did it not to save money but because he had an outstanding warrent for his arrest. Buying a ticket under your own name is a great way to get busted I would suppose.
He is lucky he didn't get killed in a depressured cabin though, and I can't imagine a coach fair is much more then air mailing a what, 300 lb crate?
To: Recourse
The article leaves out the critical detail. How much did he save by going freight?

,,, I think The Velvet Underground had a song about Waldo Jefferson, who mailed himself to his girlfriend, Marsha, in a box - just like this. Absurdly simple!

From the Dallas Morning News: The source close to the investigation said Mr. McKinley broke out of the crate just in time for the deliveryman to see him. Initially, the "shaken and frightened" deliveryman thought Mr. McKinley was dead, having seen two eyes peering out between the crate's wooden slats, the DeSoto police report said. "If he [Mr. McKinley] would have waited 15 minutes, he would have been fine and he would have been home free," the source said.

All the while the Feds what to "color code" its passengers for security threats.
The only reason we have NOT been hit with another terrorist attact (they can choose the weapon) is because nobody has ordered it yet...
This "crate" could have held...well, use your imagination.
Of course, crates with lethals can't target government buildings so prehaps the priority isn't as extreme.

The things smokers will consider simply to light up onboard the aircraft.

I am surprised no one has mentioned a similar incident that happened not long after 9-11 on (I believe) an Italian plane bound for the US. I am not sure I buy this guy's excuse of wanting to visit his father, but not wanting to pay for a ticket.

"It is unfortunate that one individual would choose to flaunt air regulations," he said. Too many idiots with access to the commercial aviation system, and this Pilot Air CEO is obviously one of them. It is flat out terrifying that any individual or individuals could do this anytime they liked, for much less innocent purposes. And it's no comfort at all that the crate was dutifully kept off passenger planes. Earth to CEO: cargo planes carry just as much fuel as passenger planes, and work just as well to pulverize buildings full of people. The days of viewing airplane security risk as involving just passengers and crew ended one year and 363 days ago, but apparently Mr. Phillips didn't get the memo.
