A "Yellow Dog Democrat" is an unswerving Democratic Party loyalist.

The term comes from the 1928 elections. During the election, Senator Tom Heflin of Alabama refused to support fellow Democrat Al Smith. Instead, Heflin chose to support Republican Herbert Hoover, who would go onto become President.

Many Alabamians disagreed with Heflin's choice and in retaliation popularized the line "I'd vote for a yellow dog if he ran on the Democratic ticket!" Compared to the hapless Smith, it illustrated the lengths some Democrats will go to support their party.

I am sure most freepers realize this, but "yellow" does not refer to color - a "yellow dog" is a dog that won't hunt or defend - a dog frightened of it's own shadow. It just lives off of what's given it and doesn't earn it's keep. It's just no good.

In view of that, I think a yellow dog is an excellent choice for a party mascot.

Heard a guy on the news the other day, that was from Alabama during the 10 commandments dust-up, that stated he was a "yellowdog" Democrat and when he dies he wants to be buried in the same county so he can continue to vote democrat.

I think the Democrats must have some inkling of what a Yellowdog is...as most of their candidates resemble your definition ....

Yellowdog democrats are an amazing phenomena. Many of them
have conserative values, but they continue to flush themselves along with the rest of the filth thats in the toilet. California has plenty of them, and look where it is going.

Historically, the image of a Yellow Dog Democrat has been a rural white Southerner. But in comtemporary times that image is no longer valid. Today's Yellow Dogs are minorities, labor unions, and government workers.

My parents, grandparents, and great grandparents were all Democrats.

I am the opposite of a Yellow Dog Democrat. I'd vote for a yellow dog before I'd vote for a Democrat.

My parents, grandparents, and great grandparents would do the same if they were alive today. Since they cannot repudiate the Democrat Party and everything that it has become, it is my responsibility to do it for them.

I think you've invented a new pronoun: "hir". English needs a gender neutral pronoun, and I think you've hit on it, at least in the possessive case. Good for you! What do you suggest for the subjective and objective cases?

Former Democrat Gov. Mark White of Texas made a big deal of taking a yellow dog to the polls when he ran for re-election and he got beat!

I loved it!
